It seems that DOOM: The Dark Ages isn’t enjoying a robust beginning, as suggested by the number of players on Steam at the same time.
Although this metric offers just a limited perspective on the game’s total performance so far, it has peaked at a player count of 30,802, and it appears that the number might not see substantial growth during the weekend.
For a better understanding, it’s important to note that the peak number of players for the previous game, DOOM Eternal, was 106,891. That figure surpasses the current player count of id Software’s most recent release by more than three times.
While “The Dark Ages” can be played via Xbox Game Pass, it’s important to note that this might have diverted some players from Steam. However, it is noteworthy that two other games, “Clair Obscur: Expedition 33” and “The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered,” are also part of Microsoft’s subscription service. These titles have a much larger player base compared to DOOM.
There’s a chance that the game could be doing better sales on consoles. In fact, it’s currently ranked third on the PlayStation Store’s top sellers list, trailing only NBA 2K25 and Fortnite. However, considering the series’ past performance on PC, it appears improbable that the PS5 version is outperforming significantly.
Indeed, these circumstances have sparked a quest to understand why things didn’t go as planned. It’s important to note that the game has received positive reviews – we even gave it an 8/10 score – but some argue that there are just too many excellent games being released at once for fans to keep up with them all.
Many people are commenting on the expensive cost of this game, pointing out that $69.99 is quite steep for a single-player first-person shooter today, regardless of how excellent the game may be.
From a dedicated fan’s perspective, the initial week’s success of DOOM: The Dark Ages isn’t entirely clear yet, as there appears to be a need for more comprehensive data beyond just Steam concurrent players. It’s undeniable that the launch seems to have started on a more subdued note than what was initially anticipated.
