As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that my recent horror flick pick, “Final Destination: Bloodlines,” successfully dethroned the two-week box office king, “Thunderbolts,” with an impressive debut. According to Deadline, this chilling chapter in the franchise is projected to rake in approximately $46 million domestically during its first three days, breaking new records. The film garnered a staggering $21 million on its opening day alone, Friday, May 16th, setting a series best. Previously, the highest opening for a Final Destination movie was “The Final Destination” in 2009 with $27.4 million. It looks like we can expect “Bloodlines” to outshine “Final Destination 5″‘s domestic total of $42.5 million in just one weekend.
Initially dominating the box office for its first two weeks, Marvel’s “Thunderbolts” is expected to drop to second place with an estimated earning of $15.5 million. It’s in a tight race with “Sinners,” projected to earn around $15 million and potentially take third place. The remaining spots in the top five are anticipated to be filled by “A Minecraft Movie” (earning approximately $5.9 million) and “The Accountant 2” ($4.5 million).
As the weekend approaches, it appears that “Final Destination: Bloodlines” will outperform initial predictions at the box office. Initial estimates had suggested an opening weekend of around $35-40 million, but with strong performances so far, the film could potentially earn up to $50 million if the next few days continue in this manner. The movie’s positive word of mouth and excellent Rotten Tomatoes score, which sets a series record, may have contributed to its success.
The Marvel Studios film titled “Thunderbolts*” has exhibited some intriguing behavior. After a less-than-spectacular start to launch the summer movie season, “Thunderbolts*” managed to maintain its audience in the following week with a minimal 53% decrease in ticket sales for its second weekend. By the end of the current weekend, it is expected to amass a domestic total of approximately $154.4 million, which places it among the lower earnings for an MCU movie. Despite favorable reviews, “Thunderbolts*” has not achieved blockbuster success.
Given the significant success of “Final Destination Bloodlines“, it’s reasonable to assume that a sequel might be in the works. However, Warner Bros. has not yet confirmed plans for a follow-up, leaving us curious about what lies ahead. The directors of “Bloodlines”, Adam Stein and Zach Lipovsky, seem doubtful about returning for another installment as they feel they’ve exhausted their creative ideas for unique death scenes. Since “Bloodlines” was applauded for its horror sequences, it would be unfortunate if Stein and Lipovsky didn’t return. If Warner Bros. intends to continue the franchise, they may have to find a new director who can bring a fresh perspective to the established formula.
The movie “Final Destination Bloodlines” boasts a production budget of $50 million, which means it’s poised to make a good return on investment. Even though most horror films typically see a majority of their earnings in the initial release, it’s expected to have a profitable theater run. It doesn’t have much competition that targets its specific audience, so it should be able to stand firm against the combined impact of “Lilo & Stitch” and “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” during Memorial Day weekend. These two new releases will dominate the holiday period, but “Bloodlines” is set up for a successful run.
