In the world of “The Wheel of Time”, Moiraine seeks an individual to mentor Rand al’Thor, channeling his power as the Dragon Reborn. There are multiple potential candidates in this universe who could take on this task for the show. The ending of season 3 revealed Rand declaring himself as Car’a’carn before the Aiel, fulfilling a part of the prophecy. Moiraine is helping him navigate his path to fight for the Light in the Last Battle. However, the true test will be within Rand himself, as he grapples with the intensely volatile male aspect of the One Power.
In Robert Jordan’s fantasy series, ‘The Wheel of Time’, magic is intricate and complex, with women being predominantly the ones who can wield it due to a division in its power sources – saidin and saidar. Saidin, corrupted by the Dark One, drives men who channel it to madness, making it an uncontrollable whirlwind of energy that even a powerful channeler like Rand al’Thor finds incredibly tempting to yield to. This is why Moiraine requires the assistance of another male channeler to keep Rand on the correct path.
4. Asmodean
Asmodean Teaches Rand In The Books
In seasons 2 and 3 of “The Wheel of Time,” Rand al’Thor grapples with the manipulations of Lanfear, who is one of the Forsaken – powerful entities serving the Dark One but pursuing their own objectives within Robert Jordan’s intricate world. The Forsaken make for captivating antagonists due to their complex motivations throughout the series. Unlikewise, Asmodean, another Forsaken character, has yet to appear in “The Wheel of Time” TV show, even though season 3 covers “The Shadow Rising,” a key novel featuring him significantly.
In “The Shadow Rising,” Asmodean disguises himself as Jasin Natael and chases Rand across the Aiel Waste, aiming to gather more data and strengthen ties with the Dragon Reborn. Eventually, Rand overpowers Asmodean but spares him, using him as an instructor on the male side of the One Power instead. Throughout the rest of the series, it’s hard to tell if Asmodean is plotting against Rand or genuinely switching allegiances to train him. Regardless, he offers a captivating adversary for the TV show that highlights the complexity of the Forsaken.
3. Rahvin
Rahvin & Rand Will Cross Paths Soon
The Amazon Prime Video series based on “The Wheel of Time” often combines characters. Since the fourth season will largely follow “The Fires of Heaven,” Rahvin is expected to serve as the main villain in Rand’s storyline. With Moghedien, Lanfear, and possibly Graendal already present, it seems unlikely that Asmodean, another major Forsaken character, will be introduced.
Season 3 of The Wheel of Time introduced the character Rahvin disguised as Lord Gaebril, an advisor to Queen Morgase Trakand of Andor. In The Fires of Heaven, Morgase is forced into exile when Rahvin employs his Compulsion power to expel her and her loyal associates. It appears that Season 4 will position Rand and Elayne to aid in reclaiming Andor from Rahvin, which could put Rand on a path to using this Forsaken as a mentor rather than Asmodean. Although Rahvin differs significantly from Asmodean, the TV series has a reputation for taking creative liberties with its source material.
In Rand’s journey, the Stone of Tear marks a significant milestone where he acquires Callandor, the sa’angreal sword, in “The Dragon Reborn”. In a scene from season 3, Lanfear suggested Rahvin should encounter Rand at Tear, signifying their possible early meeting. Having assembled his troops in the Aiel Waste, Rand now plans to move towards Tear next, setting him on a collision course with Rahvin, and potentially offering chances for him to learn from another male channeler.
2. Mazrim Taim
Mazrim Taim Teaches Men To Control The One Power
In the epic series “Wheel of Time” by Robert Jordan, Mazrim Taim isn’t introduced until the book “Lord of Chaos.” Though he’s been hinted at in the TV show and mentioned in the books prior, his entrance keeps readers eagerly waiting. A significant part that Mazrim Taim assumes is leading the Black Tower, an establishment where male channelers can learn and control their powers, which Rand established after choosing to forgive men capable of wielding the One Power.
This moment in the books is crucial, and it wouldn’t surprise me if Mazrim Taim becomes instrumental in the TV show. Given that he heads a tower training men to control their power, it seems likely he’ll tutor Rand, the most significant among them. However, Taim is quite haughty, and it’s later revealed that he collaborates with the Dark One, eventually becoming one of the Forsaken in the Last Battle. This could suggest that he might fill Asmodean’s role as Rand’s teacher in the TV series.
Mazrim Taim appears to be a significant character in the series, however, the narrative structure suggests that he may not appear until Season 5. This timing is strategic as it aligns with the storyline of “Lord of Chaos,” which would provide an excellent opportunity for him to take center stage.
1. Logain
Logain & Rand’s Connection Has Already Been Established
Logain is a character we’ve met before on the TV series, with a significant part in season 1 and a recurring one in season 2. Although he hasn’t appeared since his Cairhien scene in season 2, the differences in his character from the books suggest that he will have an impact on Rand’s future. In both the novels and the show, Logain gives Rand an intense, prolonged gaze whenever they are together, even though he had no prior awareness of him, hinting at a mysterious bond between them.
In the series, Logain was a False Dragon who lost his capacity to harness the One Power after being captured and tamed by the Aes Sedai at the end of season 1. In the books, he stays in Tar Valon, but for dramatic purposes, the show moved him to Cairhien to create an opportunity for him to encounter Rand earlier than originally planned. Though Logain may not have been the Dragon Reborn, his extensive experience with the One Power, which predates Rand’s journey from the Two Rivers, provides a compelling reason for their eventual meeting.
In their interactions during season 2, Logain and Rand had heartfelt conversations about their mutual responsibilities. This setup hinted at a potential future mentorship role for Logain regarding Rand. As revealed in a 2018 interview with showrunner Rafe Judkins, there are plans to broaden Logain’s character in the TV series, as he finds the character intriguing. Given his possible development, it seems likely that Logain could step into the mentor position, potentially incorporating aspects of Asmodean or Mazrim Taim’s narratives from the books. This would create a composite character reminiscent of how multiple characters have been combined in the past on The Wheel of Time.
In terms of my predictions for who might teach Rand starting from season 4, Logain seems to be the strongest candidate at this point. This assumption is particularly valid considering that the incident known as the Breaking of the White Tower took place in season 3, making it ideal to introduce Logain during the adaptation of “The Fires of Heaven” within The Wheel of Time. If Mazrim Taim were to appear in season 5, the series could develop their rivalry in a way that mirrors their later interactions as depicted in the books.
