Despite Lucy leading her team to rescue Miles from the Eastern Front in the season 7 finale, much of her first night shift is spent responding to calls on her own while her team sleeps in a parking garage.
In an interview with Rachel Foertsch from ScreenRant, Hawley explains that Lucy’s covert missions as a sergeant might take on a new form compared to her previous assignments. One aspect of Lucy Chen that stood out among the cast of The Rookie was her enthusiasm for undercover work. Although discussions about how this would alter if she became a sergeant were limited between Lucy and Tim, it has been confirmed by Hawley that Lucy Chen will still participate in occasional undercover operations during The Rookie’s eighth season.
She absolutely has the ability to pull it off. The opportunity isn’t shut off for her. While I don’t believe we’ll see her taking on an extended undercover role in season 8, it seems likely that we will witness her going undercover during that season. Just remember, we need to find a fresh approach to this scenario.
Instead of constantly wondering if a character will be discovered or not, we’re looking for innovative ways to present new intrigue and narratives in our stories featuring both her and Harper. This is what we are brainstorming at the moment.

How Will Her Undercover Work Look Different As A Sergeant?
As a movie enthusiast, it seems like the writers are already brainstorming Lucy’s upcoming undercover mission, yet there’s a legitimate worry from Hawley – repeating old storylines won’t work now that Lucy holds a leadership position. Given Lucy and Tim’s relationship developed during Chen’s undercover days in ‘The Rookie’, it could be intriguing if her next assignment somehow impacts the dynamics at Chenford. Bradford might not feature in this case, but perhaps that’s exactly what makes things interesting when Tim struggles to protect Lucy, leading to a shift in the storyline’s stakes.
As a devoted movie enthusiast, I’d rephrase it like this: Instead of casting me as the undercover agent in the next mission, they could elevate my role by putting me in charge. While I’m confident in my ability to maintain my cover, making decisions when an officer is suspected of being compromised would test my leadership skills as a sergeant. Initially, I might need to observe an undercover officer through their wire, which would demand that I adapt to my new role in a way that feels authentic to my character development.

With the potential threats that Lucy (and perhaps Tim) might encounter in season 8, it’s thrilling to witness these characters venturing into daring new territories.
