In a six-part drama series titled “Code of Silence,” airing on ITV, the lead role is played by Rose Ayling-Ellis as Alison Brooks, a young Deaf individual who works in a police cafeteria. The detectives enlist her help due to her exceptional lip-reading abilities, believing this skill could aid them in apprehending a dangerous criminal group.
Writer Catherine Moulton, with her own skills in lip-reading and being partially Deaf, expressed that she finds the work exhilarating.
The group takes precautions to convene at locations that ensure no surveillance… With the police struggling to keep up, it’s only Alison who possesses the necessary abilities to assist in collecting proof regarding the upcoming heist they’re orchestrating.
In the continuation of their conversation, Ayling-Ellis elaborated on the significance of encounters with law enforcement officers for Alison, considering her specific circumstances and disability.
She pointed out that offering employment at a pub to someone who is deaf may seem like an act of kindness they greatly appreciate, but it might not align with their true career aspirations.
That resonates with me, as I had similar beginnings. Prior to where I am now, I used to work at a supermarket, tended gardens, and even sewed clothes. However, despite my efforts, I never advanced in those roles or climbed the career ladder.
She finds great significance in her police work, not just because she’s Deaf or disabled, but because many like her have faced similar challenges. This role gives her a sense of empowerment, as it’s something the police force can’t always achieve themselves. However, she occasionally oversteps boundaries with this power.
But Ayling-Ellis also has another connection to the story.
The series is set in Canterbury, which is a place that means a lot to her.
She expressed her excitement when she learned the setting was Canterbury, reminding her of college friends.
I also incorporated some of those items into it secretly, but let them not know! My friends have a strong affinity for the ‘Canterbury culture’, and we adore shopping at vintage or thrift stores. I wanted the same experience for Alison too; finding second-hand sweaters and mixing and matching clothes from these shops.
Executive Producer Bryony Arnold mentioned that Moulton had a strong interest in portraying a location seldom seen on television, yet one potentially harboring shady or illegal activities.
“Kent has a high rate for organised criminal gang activity,” she added.
But did the cast and crew film there?

Code of Silence filming locations: Where was the ITV crime thriller shot?

While the narrative is set in Canterbury, the cast and crew didn’t actually film there.
During the Q&A session, Arnold mentioned, “We had plans to shoot there, but it turned out to be quite challenging logistically for us to physically go there and film.
The task proved difficult due to its remote location, lacking a team and necessary facilities. Essentially, it didn’t align well with the timetable.
Indeed, we found ourselves exploring quite a bit on the M25 motorway. Specifically, St Albans turned out to be an excellent choice for us, as it mirrored Canterbury in many ways. Additionally, there were several other locations in Berkshire and Hertfordshire that caught our interest, such as Hemel Hempstead.
