James Gunn Reveals DCU Timeline Through 2026: What’s Coming Next!

James Gunn, one of the co-CEOs at DC Studios, recently clarified some uncertainties about the chronological sequence of events within the DC Universe as depicted in their film franchise. Since joining forces with Peter Safran, they have been appointed as co-CEOs of the revamped DC Studios and are now eager to bring their new DC storyline to life on the big screen, with production slated to commence towards the end of 2024.

James Gunn clarified the sequence of events for his upcoming DC Universe (DCU), detailing the initial projects arranged chronologically. Fans had been somewhat puzzled about the direction of the franchise due to several movies being released prior to its establishment, but Gunn eliminated any doubts regarding the development path of the DCU by explaining the order in which its projects will unfold.

As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’d like to clarify from my perspective. Just as James Gunn, head of DC Studios, put it straightforwardly, the sequential release of our films follows the very timeline within the universe itself. It’s like watching a well-crafted story unfold on the big screen, with each movie building upon the last, creating an immersive and coherent experience for us all.

Currently, the release of films and TV series follows a similar pattern as portrayed in them, with occasional scenes that depict flashbacks.

Timeline Order For the First 5 DCU Projects

Creature Commandos

In December 2024, the animated series “Creature Commandos” debuted as the start of the DC Universe, continuing the narrative initiated in the 2021 movie “The Suicide Squad“. This show reintroduced several main antiheroes and villains from the film, offering a glimpse into the style of James Gunn’s voice and cinematic approach with some of DC Comics’ most prominent characters.

In the end, it was Creature Commandos who suffered a loss against Princess Ilana Rostovic, portrayed by Maria Bakalova, during their final showdown. The Bride guided a restructured team into Season 2, and we’ll see them again soon. Also returning at the last minute was King Shark, while G.I. Robot received an upgrade in preparation for the exciting events of Season 2.

The first season of “Creature Commandos” is currently available for streaming on Max. At this point, we know that a second season is in the works, but as of now, there’s no set release date.

Superman

After the release of “Creature Commandos”, DC Studios is set to make its theatrical debut in July with a standalone “Superman” film, which marks the beginning of James Gunn’s DC Universe. David Corenswet plays Superman in this movie, alongside an outstanding ensemble cast. This will be the first solo Superman movie since 2013’s “Man of Steel” to grace the big screen.

Under Gunn’s guidance, Superman continues his role as Metropolis’ protector, approximately a year into his tenure. Balancing his life between the Daily Planet and his heroic duties, Clark Kent will encounter numerous challenges and perilous situations. Facing adversaries such as Lex Luthor and others, he demonstrates the grit and determination required to be a hero.

Superman will soar into theaters on July 11.

Peacemaker Season 2

Following Superman’s upcoming project, you’ll see the return of Peacemaker in Season 2. This sequel will expand on the narrative introduced for Christopher Smith in Season 1 and The Suicide Squad, with John Cena leading the cast and introducing new faces such as Brey Noelle from White Rabbit. Keeping up with its trademark blend of intense action and humor, this R-rated series is set to continue its wild, violent exploits shortly.

In essence, disregarding the Justice League cameo from Season 1, Season 2 promises to amplify the madness, introducing a second character portrayed by John Cena as Peacemaker. This development, coupled with Frank Grillo’s presence in both seasons as Rick Flag Sr., establishes direct connections to Superman. As a result, viewers can expect an intricate narrative surrounding this well-known antihero’s return to the limelight, leaving plenty of thought-provoking questions and engaging content.

Peacemaker Season 2 will debut on HBO Max on August 21.

Lanterns

After the conclusion of “Peacemaker”, DC Studios’ initial lineup will proceed with “Lanterns”, marking the first live-action series centered around Green Lantern since the 2011 movie, which was less than favorable. In this upcoming show, Aaron Pierre portrays John Stewart and Kyle Chandler plays Hal Jordan. This production is set to delve into the Green Lantern Corps as a whole, with their mission being to safeguard the galaxy.

In my perspective, I’ll be delving into an Earth-bound enigma that links to the overarching narrative unfolding in DCU’s Chapter 1. Alongside my partner, John, we’ll be investigating this mystery under the watchful eye of Ulrich Thompson’s Sinestro. This storyline is poised to debut the Lantern Corps within the broader DC Universe for the very first time. As the tale unfolds, I might find myself standing side by side with the Justice League in the future.

Lanterns is expected to debut on HBO Max in early 2026.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow

Approximately one year following the debut of Superman, the first standalone Supergirl movie, titled “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” is set to release, marking Kara Zor-El’s initial solo flight. Milly Alcock from “House of the Dragon” will spearhead the project, with Jason Momoa portraying a new DC supervillain, Lobo. The film is directed by Craig Gillespie.

The upcoming movie is inspired by Tom King’s well-known comic series, but specific plot points for Supergirl are still mostly secret as filming nears its end. Alcock might make an appearance in the 2025 Superman film too, setting up a potential cameo that could lead to her own standalone movie following an initial encounter with her relative.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will blast into theaters on June 26, 2026
