In the tradition of many cop buddy movies, we have “First Shift.” This time, the new partnership is between New York police officer Deo (Gino Anthony Pesi) and Angela (Kristen Renton), a fresh recruit from Florida. While she’s all cheerful sunshine, Deo is a gruff New Yorker. To make matters worse, she’s constantly updating her social media followers about her day, which irks Deo. However, as they navigate their first shift together, it’s likely that his initial dislike and contempt for her will transform into mutual respect by the end of their shift. That’s just how these buddy cop stories usually unfold.
As a cinephile, I must say this movie weaves together an assortment of narratives that are as diverse as they come. There’s a troubled soul holed up in his bathroom, a Mafia hit on a duo father-son pair, and an elderly gentleman collapsing in a store, leaving his dog under Deo’s care. It’s an unusual combination of tales, each standing independently with no interplay or connection to the others throughout the film’s duration. The two cops occasionally dive into these stories as they strive to make sense of it all, but the narrative feels fragmented and disjointed, culminating in an incongruous conclusion.
In the hands of director Uwe Boll, known for his low-budget films, we find a return to familiar territory after his retirement in 2016. The film’s pace is inconsistent, with an opening scene lasting almost too long, depicting Deo’s breakfast preparation (even though the movie itself is just 90 minutes long). The dialogue also seems uneven, featuring stereotypical characters and lines that might prompt criticism from reviewers, such as an actor saying, “Tell me this isn’t some clichéd nonsense!
Over the years, Boll has faced considerable criticism, with numerous movies drawing harsh reviews. This pattern is evident in ‘Raging Boll’ and ‘First Shift.’ However, it seems unlikely that this film will sway anyone’s opinion of his work. Yet, Boll appears undeterred, as the movie concludes with a promise for more – ‘Coming soon – Part Two.’
