Actor Jai Courtney remains optimistic that his character from DC may make a comeback. Most famously, he portrayed Captain Boomerang in 2016’s Suicide Squad, directed by David Ayer, alongside notable characters like Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, Will Smith’s Deadshot, and Joel Kinnaman’s Col. Rick Flag. He reappeared as Captain Boomerang in The Suicide Squad (directed by James Gunn) in 2021; however, unlike his previous stint, the character didn’t survive Gunn’s version of the team of disposable supervillains.
In the movie’s thrilling opening, Captain Boomerang, played by Courtney, was part of Task Force X who stormed the shores of Corto Maltese first. A majority of the team, including Captain Boomerang, Savant (Michael Rooker), Blackguard (Pete Davidson), Javelin (Flula Borg), Mongal (Mayling Ng), and T.D.K./The Detachable Kid (Nathan Fillion), met their gruesome ends in a series of violent scenes.
However, in a recent chat, Courtney disclosed that the filmmaker behind The Suicide Squad indicated that there’s no reason why Boomerang can’t return.
Courtney explained to Variety that when discussing his role in The Suicide Squad with Gunn, he said something like, “C’mon, man! Boomerang is awesome,” and Gunn replied, “Well, these rules aren’t always set in stone. Just because a character dies here doesn’t mean they’re gone forever, right?” To which Courtney enthusiastically agreed, “Absolutely!
Courtney mentioned with optimism,” she might reappear in the DC Universe. A small part of me secretly wishes we’ll get to see Boomerang again someday.
Since then, Gunn has taken over as head of DC Studios, alongside producer Peter Safran. They’ve referred to the animated series ‘Creature Commandos’ as a sort of appetizer, serving as an introduction to the official start of the new canon which will be launched with Gunn’s ‘Superman’ movie in July. Last year, Gunn said, “Nothing is considered part of the canon until the release of ‘Creature Commandos’ next year, essentially acting as a prelude to the DC Universe, followed by a more immersive exploration into the universe through ‘Superman.’ Some actors will reprise their roles and there may be some consistency with plot points from previous DC films, shows, and animated projects. However, nothing is considered part of the canon until ‘Creature Commandos’ and ‘Superman’.
In the second season of the HBO Max show “Peacemaker,” a series born from the film “The Suicide Squad,” we find a blend of the old DC Extended Universe and the new DC Universe stories, hinted at by the trailer featuring Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced) and Green Lantern Guy Gardner (Fillion), characters from the “Superman” movie. The character Captain Boomerang, who met his end in “The Suicide Squad,” may make another appearance according to Gunn, as he refers to that film as having a lighter connection to the DC Universe compared to others.
As a die-hard DC Universe fan, I’d put it this way: “In the new timeline of our beloved DCU, events from the past that are referenced in stories like ‘Creature Commandos’ become official cannon. So, the mission to Corto Maltese is part of our universe’s history because it was mentioned, but the details may not necessarily match what we saw unfold in ‘The Suicide Squad’.
The newly introduced DC Universe, currently comprising of teams like the Creature Commandos, Superman, and Peacemaker (season 2), commences its journey when Superman makes his cinematic debut in theaters on July 11, marking the first film release from DC Studios.
