Billy Bob Thornton, the star we all know, shares his interpretation with fans about the cryptic role of the foreboding coyote and its potential impact on Tommy’s destiny in the show.
In an open discussion, Thornton shared his interpretation of the two coyote sequences as portrayed by Landman. “There were some lines of dialogue in the initial coyote scene that addressed me and then another character,” Thornton reminisced. “One evening, Taylor and I discussed it, and we felt that this scene should be without dialogue since you’re essentially adding another layer to an already layered symbol, if you catch my drift?
Thornton believes that, much like him, Taylor likely perceives the coyote symbolically. He suggests that for Tommy, the coyote represents a question: “Is the coyote a reflection of me, or am I its prey? Will I kill the coyote or will it kill me? Which role do I play in this scenario?” According to Thornton, Tommy seems to identify with the coyote in an unusual way, as if he sees himself mirrored in it. This coyote, staring back at him, symbolizes a question about his own place in the situation. In Thompson’s view, Tommy saw himself and perhaps even foretold his own fate or destiny in this coyote.
Landman Has Been a Hit for Paramount+
In the starring role as oil company executive Tommy Norris, Thornton first appeared when the series “Landman” premiered on Paramount+ on November 17, 2024. The show delves into the thrilling world of corporate development in West Texas’s oilfields, where Tommy must navigate high-stakes situations. Notable actors like Demi Moore, Jon Hamm, and Ali Larter are part of the main cast, along with guest stars such as Michael Peña and Andy García. Upon its release, “Landman” received widespread acclaim from critics and viewers, with Thornton’s performance earning Best Actor in a Television Series Drama nominations at both the 2024 Satellite Awards and Golden Globes.
Enthusiasts of the “Landman” series are now eagerly waiting for the early arrival of Season 2. Originally slated for 2026, it’s been confirmed that it will instead premiere on Paramount+ in November this year. What’s more exciting is that Season 2 will introduce another Hollywood legend, Sam Elliott, to the “Landman” universe. Although his casting might have come as a shock initially, Elliot has previously worked with “Landman” creator Tyler Sheridan, having played Shea Brennan in the prequel series to “Yellowstone”, titled “1883”.
