The journey for the BioShock movie has been bumpy, but recently, it appears that progress is being made. This film was initially unveiled at Netflix around three years ago, and much has transpired since then. The movie is now under the direction of Francis Lawrence, who previously helmed several installments in The Hunger Games franchise and also an upcoming adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, The Long Walk, slated for release later this year. In a recent interview with IGN, Lawrence provided a brief update on BioShock. Despite some hurdles the movie faced since its initial announcement, it seems that everything is finally falling into place.
Lawrence explained to IGN that the adaptation is quite complex, requiring much deliberation and precision. There have been shifts in leadership at Netflix, which has led to pauses and renewed efforts, but he feels confident that we’re currently making good progress.
In the San Diego Comic-Con of last year, BioShock producer Roy Lee discussed some changes in the project’s management at Netflix, leading to a smaller budget than initially projected. Consequently, Lee mentioned that the movie would take on a more intimate perspective and scale, deviating from the initial grand design. The final size of the project compared to its original conception is yet to be determined. Initially, Logan writer Michael Green was attached to BioShock, but the current script is being penned by Justin Rhodes, who has experience adapting video games. He wrote the script for Secret Level’s Unreal Tournament episode and co-wrote the Warhammer 40,000 episode.
During an interview with IGN, Lawrence admitted to having received a script for BioShock prior to a discussion with Rhodes. This might indicate that progress is being made on the film, although it’s likely that we’re several years away from its release. Fans excited about the prospect of seeing BioShock become a reality may find this wait disappointing, but hopefully, the final product will be worth it in the end.
It’s reassuring to learn that the development of BioShock hasn’t stopped! With all the recent shakeups at Netflix, the Writer’s Guild strike, and typical production issues, it wouldn’t be unreasonable for fans to speculate whether BioShock had been secretly scrapped. However, considering the current enthusiasm in Hollywood for video game adaptations, it’s not surprising that BioShock is still moving forward on Netflix. Successful adaptations like Fallout, Minecraft, Sonic the Hedgehog, and The Last of Us have dominated recently. Though Netflix has been slow to capitalize on the gold rush of video games, hopefully, BioShock will provide an opportunity for them to catch up.
