In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the friendship between Captain America and the Winter Soldier emerged as a beloved bond among fans. Bucky Barnes experienced an intriguing character development, initially serving as Captain America’s sidekick, then being transformed into Hydra’s sleeper agent. Additionally, his journey to redemption and joining both the Thunderbolts and New Avengers adds depth to his storyline. Although Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes may not be reunited in the MCU, their interaction continues in comics. The pair is reconnected once more in a new “Thunderbolts” comic series, but what stands out most is that Captain America presents Winter Soldier with something he has been lacking in the MCU.
Marvel unveiled a sneak peek at “Thunderbolts: Doomstrike” #5 by writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly, artists Tommaso Bianchi, Yen Nitro, and letterer VC’s Joe Sabino. This limited series unfolds within the scope of “One World Under Doom“, a storyline where Doctor Doom conquers the world. Naturally, this isn’t a situation that Bucky Barnes is content to watch unfold. As such, he reassembles the Thunderbolts to confront Doctor Doom. However, things haven’t been going smoothly for Bucky’s reformed team of Thunderbolts, culminating in their leader becoming Doctor Doom’s captive.
The intriguing idea of a dinner rendezvous between Doctor Doom and Bucky Barnes is captivating on its own, but the sneak peek for Thunderbolts: Doomstrike #5 adds suspense by rekindling the bond between Captain America and the Winter Soldier. Black Widow has orchestrated a mission to take Cap and the Thunderbolts to Doom’s stronghold with the intention of rescuing Bucky, but Captain America doesn’t arrive empty-handed. Instead, he presents his old metal arm – the one he lost in Captain America: Civil War – to Bucky. A brawl ensued between the two friends in Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #6, with Bucky using his metal arm to send Cap tumbling into the Atlantic Ocean.
In my perspective as a movie reviewer, I’d say: “With the Thunderbolts standing alongside me, the Winter Soldier embarks on a mission to level Doomstadt. However, our team isn’t met with an easy victory. We face stiff resistance from the former Thunderbolts, now known as Fulgur Victoris, who prove to be formidable opponents.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Bucky’s prosthetic arm was upgraded with a Vibranium one, which he continues to use. However, his original metal arm made a reappearance in the “Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special”. During this time, Nebula gave it as a gift to Rocket Raccoon.
It’s clear that characters such as Winter Soldier and Black Widow lived through the storyline in Thunderbolts: Doomstrike #5, given they were later featured prominently in another comic series titled The New Avengers. Initially, Marvel intended to call this new comic New Thunderbolts, mirroring the title of an MCU film. However, similarly to the Thunderbolts movie, the asterisk (*) in the original title was used as a subtle hint, indicating that the actual name would be The New Avengers.
Surprise! It turns out that the NEW AVENGERS have been the main group all along! As I promised, there will be many unexpected twists ahead. Humphries made this announcement when the New Avengers were finally unveiled. Working with the New Avengers and the Killuminati in this new era will be both exhilarating and a privilege, as these two teams bring high-octane dynamics to match their formidable threats.
Doomstrike #5, it’s stated as “THE LAST CONFRONTATION! Bucky’s group of Thunderbolts engages in a decisive battle with Doom’s forces to decide the future of the rebellion!
