For approximately 26 years, Mariska Hargitay has been a valued member of an exceptional team on television. Now, the actress known for Law & Order: SVU is eager to share untold tales, primarily focusing on her mother, iconic screen star Jayne Mansfield.
However, one of the key points revealed in Mariska’s documentary titled “My Mom Jayne“, which debuted at the Cannes Film Festival on May 17, was undoubtedly surprising: her late father, the former Mr. Universe Mickey Hargitay, is not her biological father.
In the document, Mariska shared that it was when she turned 25, around two decades following her mother’s death in a car accident, that she first learned about Las Vegas entertainer Nelson Sardelli. This marks her debut as a feature film director.
The elderly woman expressed that it was as if the ground beneath her had suddenly vanished when she first saw a picture of the Brazilian entertainer. This is why, deep down, she always felt distinct from Mickey and Jayne’s other children, Mickey “Miklos” Jr., 66, and Zoltan, 64. She described it as if her foundation had crumbled away.
She directly addressed Mickey, whom she often refers to as “my everything, my ideal,” with the revelation. However, once he asserted that he was actually her father, the topic was never discussed between them again.
Instead of waiting for answers, she decided to approach Nelson, a frequent visitor to Sin City’s Flamingo, who had performed on cruise ships and across all continents, including shows at the Sydney Opera House and New York City’s Carnegie Hall, in 1994 when he was performing in Atlantic City, N.J.
Speaking about their encounter with Vanity Fair, Mariska expressed that it brought him to tears, explaining, “I’ve been eagerly anticipating this moment for the past 30 years.
In 1962, Jayne officially ended her marriage with Mickey, her co-star in films such as The Loves of Hercules. From 1963 to 1964, she had a short romance with Nelson.
In 1956, he relocated to Pontiac, Michigan, as he explained in a conversation with Norm Clarke’s Vegas Diary. He stated that the reason for his move was that he had been employed by General Moters in Brazil, but they were downsizing employees across Michigan at the time.
After a stint in the military and doing construction work, he later performed at an open mic night, which kick-started his career in entertainment. This career included acting roles in films such as “Myra Breckinridge” (1970), “Fake Out” (1982), and “Chilly Dogs” (2001).
In the meantime, Jayne and Mickey (who had previously helped raise her daughter Jayne Marie, now 74 years old) reunited before Mariska was born in 1964, according to Vanity Fair. However, they officially divorced at the end of the same year.
After the initial gathering with Nelson in New Jersey, Mariska confessed, she grappled with the realization that she had been living a falsehood for her whole life.
However, over time, she developed a close relationship with Nelson and his two daughters, each of whom features in the book “My Mom Jayne“.
Mariska chose to privately show the documentary to them in Las Vegas, an event that left the sisters in tears, as Mariska later shared with Vanity Fair. She had always considered these women as close friends, but now she was deeply saddened because “I kept secrets from these two ladies I adore so much, and it’s heart-wrenching to me.
But now, she shared, the film has served as a way to “unburden all of us.”
Mariska maintains a strong bond with Nelson, who was honored with the Golden Pillow Award by the International Entertainer School of Las Vegas in 2008 and frequently organizes the Star Shine charity event for children.
However, she empathizes with her mother’s decisions, thinking that Jayne perceived Mickey as a source of stability.
She shared with Vanity Fair, “I was raised exactly as I should have been, and I understand that every decision made for me was the best at the time. I am indeed the daughter of Mickey Hargitay, and that fact is not false.
