Bungie’s Marathon, unveiled last month, hasn’t been met with much enthusiasm, and the ongoing art asset theft scandal hasn’t made things better. According to Paul Tassi of Forbes, the studio’s morale is reportedly plummeting, leading them to revamp their entire marketing approach, including a trailer that was initially intended for June.
Bungie is rumored to be developing a “public playtest schedule” instead of an open beta. There’s said to be some unease within the company about how the flop of “Marathon” might impact them. As for why, in a recent video, Tassi mentioned hearing that the extraction shooter game needs to rank among the top five best-selling games of the year according to NPD to be deemed successful.
In the present rankings of new game releases, we find three top-tier games. Firstly, “Monster Hunter Wilds” boasts over 10 million units sold. Secondly, “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” attracted approximately three million players within a week. Lastly, “The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered” has already amassed more than four million players in just four days. To put it simply, Bungie faces quite the challenge ahead.
Marathon launches on September 23rd for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC.
