Naughty Dog Confirms Another Game Is in the Works (And it Might Be Uncharted)

Currently, Naughty Dog is engaged in developing several games simultaneously, and there’s a chance one could be Uncharted. This studio, known for its consistent quality, has risen to prominence among the elite in the gaming industry. Unlike some studios that churn out numerous games per generation, Naughty Dog is approaching the status of Rockstar Games where they can release approximately one game every generation while also enhancing their previous titles. This strategy has sparked debate among fans who are eager for a new Naughty Dog adventure since it’s been five years since the unveiling of their last game, The Last of Us 2.

Indeed, contrary to expectations, The Last of Us Online wasn’t the path Naughty Dog initially intended to take. Originally, they planned to launch a multiplayer-focused sequel to the much-loved Factions mode from the first game, titled The Last of Us Online. Regrettably, this project was scrapped at the last minute due to concerns about dividing their resources and focus between single-player games and a live service game. Consequently, Naughty Dog has been without a new release for most of the PS5 generation, and it seems we won’t see a new Last of Us game until the era of the PS6.

Towards the year 2024, Naughty Dog officially announced its upcoming game titled “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet“. This is a fresh, pulpy sci-fi series that appears more action-packed than “The Last of Us”, and it certainly looks intriguing. Although we’ve only had a sneak peek into the game so far, it seems very promising. It’s been speculated that “Intergalactic” might still be several years from release, but Naughty Dog is working on other projects as well.

Naughty Dog Confirms It Has Two Games in Development

During an interview with Press X to Continue podcast, Neil Druckmann from Naughty Dog revealed they are developing a second title that he is involved in producing, but not directing. Essentially, his role will be offering suggestions, while most of the main responsibilities fall on someone else’s lap. It appears that this upcoming game may be led by Shaun Escayg, who directed Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, and there have been whispers and speculation suggesting Naughty Dog is creating a new Uncharted game featuring Cassie Drake as the central character.

According to Druckmann, he’s involved with another project at Naughty Dog where he’s taking on a producer role. This allows him to guide and provide advice to another team, serving as the key decision-maker, and it’s a position he truly enjoys.

It’s logical for Naughty Dog to continue working on an established franchise like Uncharted, as creating two entirely new franchises from scratch could require a significant amount of time and resources. Given the enduring popularity of Uncharted and the fans’ continued interest in the series after a nine-year gap, it might be wiser for Naughty Dog to revive this franchise instead of starting something completely new. This would provide an interesting contrast to their upcoming project, Intergalactic.

It’s possible that some people believe this second project is The Last of Us Part 3, but it appears doubtful given Neil Druckmann’s recent statements indicating that the game may not be developed for a while yet. Since he considers this series as his own creation, it seems plausible that he would prefer to personally supervise its development rather than delegating it to someone else, especially considering it could potentially be the final installment in the series. However, we’ll have to wait and see, but it’s thrilling to speculate about the possibility of two new Naughty Dog games launching on PS5 in a relatively short span of time.
