Thanksgiving 2: Horror Hit Sequel Confirmed with Eli Roth Returning as Director

Actress Nell Verlaque shared a thrilling piece of news about the upcoming sequel to the horror film. It appears that Eli Roth is set to resume his role as the director for the second chapter in this chilling series.

Verlaque, who portrayed the adversary of serial killer John Carver named Jessica in the initial movie, expressed her eagerness on Monday (May 19) about returning to set for Thanksgiving 2. Furthermore, she verified that filming is provisionally planned to commence shortly.

She affirmed that they plan on filming this year, and her enthusiasm is high because she recently discussed the storyline with Eli.

Roth’s 2023 blockbuster raked in over $46 million globally with a meager production cost of just $15 million. This holiday-themed horror film garnered both critical acclaim and financial success, as it boasted an impressive 84% rating from critics and a 78% approval rating among audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

“I think we will be filming this year.”

Over a fateful holiday weekend in Plymouth, Massachusetts, an enigmatic individual donning a Pilgrim hat and identifying himself as “John Carver” sets off events of unprecedented magnitude. The film depicting the first Thanksgiving stars Patrick Dempsey from Grey’s Anatomy as Sheriff Eric Newlon of Plymouth, alongside TikTok sensation Addison Rae, Jalen Thomas Brooks (of Walker) and Milo Manheim (from Zombies).

Roth vowed last November that his crew was making significant strides towards delivering more violence and frightening elements for the sequel of the Thanksgiving series.

He shared with IndieWire that they will increase the intensity, but not by using additional funds. This approach maintains a tight and efficient production, pushing them to make tough choices. Many things established in the first installment won’t need to be revisited now, allowing for a more direct focus on the payoff.

The filmmaker has promised a straight-forward, honest approach for the production of “Thanksgiving 2“, and expressed their hope that it will lead to a lasting horror movie series if the sequel proves popular.

He subtly suggested, “I’ve devised something that will be quite a task,” implying he aims for it to be a difficult feat. If what he has conceived is indeed the most thrilling way to end lives on screen, then he intends to execute it as if it were his final movie production.

Eli Roth is One of Horror’s Most Notable Directors

  • His breakthrough Hostel made more than $80 million when it hit cinemas in 2005.
  • Roth had further hits with Cabin Fever, the 2018 remake of Death Wish and the documentary Fin.
  • The filmmaker also acted in his close friend Quentin Tarantino’s World War II movie Inglourious Basterds, for which he received a Critic’s Choice Movie Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award.

Roth subsequently noted: “[The original film] served as a delightful reminder of the profound joy I experience knowing there exists a Thanksgiving movie and that it brings pleasure to many. It seems we have initiated a new tradition. All one truly desires is to make an impact – positive or negative – on popular culture. In time, all will be forgotten. What remains will be the movies.

In a playful imitation of the movie trailer style, Roth created a parody for Robert Rodriguez’s film “Grindhouse” – it is, in fact, the fourth movie born from the fictional previews shown in the 2007 movie. Similarly, Rodriguez’s “Machete” and “Machete Kills,” as well as Jason Eisener’s “Hobo with a Shotgun,” were initially envisioned as trailers within the “Grindhouse” concept.

The exact release date for Thanksgiving 2 hasn’t been confirmed yet, however, Sony had earlier announced that the movie is scheduled to be released in cinemas in the year 2025.
