Borderlands 4 Developer CEO Says “Real Fans” Would Buy the Game Even at $80

The upcoming game, “Borderlands 4“, is scheduled for release on September 12 and will be available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. However, neither the developer Gearbox nor the publisher 2K has revealed the final price of the game yet. With recent news about first-party Switch 2 and Xbox games being priced at $80, there’s speculation about the cost of “Borderlands 4”. In response to a question on social media about whether “Borderlands 4” will be sold for $80, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford stated that the decision is not his.

Additionally, he notes that dedicated fans of the Borderlands series would likely purchase the game regardless of its price tag. To drive this point home, Pitchford also recalls how he had to work at a minimum wage job to afford the Sega Genesis game Starflight, which retailed for $80 in 1991.

If you’re truly passionate, you’ll manage to accomplish it,” Pitchford wrote. “Back then, I was fresh out of high school, earning minimum wage at an ice cream shop in Pismo Beach. Yet, when I discovered that my local game store had ‘Starflight’ for Sega Genesis priced at $80 in 1991, I figured out a way to make it mine.

In response to Pitchford’s post, it hasn’t been well-received in the comments section. Many fans of Borderlands have humorously criticized Pitchford for trying to control who can be a fan of the series based on their financial resources. Additionally, some have highlighted that numerous regions are currently experiencing economic difficulties, making the purchase of an $80 game a less viable option for many people.

At a panel held earlier this month during PAX East, Pitchford discussed “Borderlands 4”, describing its world as the “largest universe we’ve ever constructed.” He also mentioned that exploration within the game’s setting of Kairos will be uninterrupted, with no load times, making it a seamless experience.

He noted that whatever you spot, whether it’s on the screen, a distance away, or high up in the sky, you’ll have the ability to reach it. He clarified that these distant locations aren’t merely decorative elements for a skybox; instead, they are explorable spaces. Players might even stumble upon something interesting in those far-off lands.

According to Pitchford, here’s the reason why Borderlands 4 won’t have a minimap. Instead of providing a detailed map, they opted for a compass to encourage more exploration and navigation within a world that will be bigger than any we’ve explored before in the series.

Pitchford stated, “Many of your actions can be confined to the local area, but your desires or aspirations often extend beyond it. A map of the local space isn’t effective when you’re considering multiple goals and prospects that might be miles apart. A compass, however, aids us in navigating such situations.
