It truly feels like Star Wars is having a moment right now.
For fans of Star Wars, there’s plenty happening – from celebrating the 20th anniversary of Revenge of the Sith to enjoying the ongoing collaboration between Fortnite and Star Wars.
For numerous gaming enthusiasts, this excitement seems to have translated into an unexpected desire to engage with Star Wars Battlefront 2.
2017 saw the launch of the second installment in the revamped Star Wars Battlefront series, which garnered a mix of responses, often being perceived as not quite living up to the hype generated by the 2005 classic.
Initially, opinions about the game were relatively subdued upon its launch, but subsequent updates over the years have noticeably enhanced the gameplay experience. Now, there’s an active community that continues to enjoy the game even years later.
As per SteamDB’s reports, which monitor player counts for games on Steam, there’s been a surprising increase in Battlefront 2 players lately over the last several weeks.
As a die-hard fan, I found myself grappling with the fact that my favorite game, Battlefront 2, was struggling to maintain its player base. The number of concurrent players hovered around the 1,000 to 2,000 mark and occasionally dipped into the 900s during April. It felt like we were fighting alone on some fronts.
Starting from early May, the number of players significantly increased, reaching a record high of 5,583 on Star Wars Day, which was on May 4th. More recently, on May 18th, there was an even higher peak of 7,816 players – the most since January 2021.
One Reddit user expressed enthusiasm about the game’s revival, stating, “Andor sparked everyone’s desire to battle the Empire.
The level of enthusiasm for the game is currently soaring, to the point where players are urging the creator to focus on developing a follow-up.
A request titled “Encourage EA Games to Create Star Wars Battlefront 3” has been posted on Change.org, asking enthusiasts of the game to demonstrate their backing. However, it currently boasts roughly 1,260 signatures at this moment.
It seems highly unlikely that Battlefront 3 will become a reality for most gamers, despite the enthusiasm of its devoted fanbase who are eagerly awaiting its release.
Despite Battlefront 2 selling an impressive 9 million units by the close of 2017, Electronic Arts (EA) failed to meet their sales expectations due to a debate over the game’s loot box mechanism, which they attributed as a contributing factor.
Given the underperformance of recent sales and the financial implications of creating a new Star Wars Battlefront title, it seems unlikely that Electronic Arts (EA) would choose to invest in another Battlefront project, more so when they are currently focused on developing the next Battlefield game.
Instead of waiting potentially forever for Star Wars Battlefront 3, it’s delightful that Battlefront 2 is currently receiving the attention and enhancements it truly merits.
