Four years have passed since “Nine Perfect Strangers” debuted on Hulu, and it’s been two years since a second season was confirmed. The first season left many viewers intrigued about the backstory of Nicole Kidman’s character, as well as her activities at the therapeutic resort. Now, Tranquillum House has new management, causing Kidman’s character to relocate to Europe where she will host nine fresh faces, hopefully providing answers to the burning questions fans have been wondering about.
Between the long intervals between seasons, it’s possible that viewers may have forgotten key events from the first season. Fortunately, we provide a recap of significant details from the initial season, as some of these elements could influence the narrative in the upcoming second season. The second season will debut on Hulu beginning May 21, with additional episodes to be released subsequently.
What Happened in Season 1?
In Season 1 of Nine Perfect Strangers, nine individuals find themselves at Tranquillum House, a wellness retreat managed by Masha Dmitrichenko. Masha established Tranquillum House following an incident where she was shot and briefly deceased. Her life was saved by Yao, who now works under her. Masha invites the nine strangers to Tranquillum House with the intention of aiding them in overcoming their troubled histories. However, as the guests begin to uncover the retreat’s secrets, they start to question Masha’s own enigmatic past.
Masha’s treatment methods encompass substances such as hallucinogens, occasionally administered to attendees in unique manners. A guest named Lars, a journalist, discloses that Masha’s techniques were previously far more intense; one of her guests perished under her supervision at the resort, an incident leading to a lawsuit against Masha. This legal matter remains unresolved by the end of the season. Additionally, Carmel, another character, confesses that she was the one who wounded Masha and has been sending her menacing messages while staying at the resort.
At the close of Season 1, the police attempt to apprehend Masha due to her actions at Tranquillum House. Yet, since her profound treatments had aided in healing the strangers, they shielded her from the authorities. Consequently, Masha escapes legal consequences, which turns out fortunate for her, as she enters a hallucination where she reunites with her deceased daughter, Tatiana. Subsequently, Masha steals Ben’s Lamborghini and departs, leaving uncertainty regarding the authenticity of this encounter.
Some unknown individuals suffer severe consequences when Masha pushes them too far and locks them in a room. Ben and Jessica purchase Tranquillum House using their lottery earnings. Carmel, having learned self-control during her retreat, now conducts her own therapy workshops. Napoleon and Heather, similar to Masha, experience visions of their deceased son. Yao and Delilah, initially Masha’s aides, depart from Tranquillum House and join the Peace Corps. Frances pens a book titled “Nine Perfect Strangers,” mirroring the first season’s storyline. Interestingly, the real-life novel didn’t receive a sequel, making the second season of the show all the more intriguing since it has yet to be written.
New Strangers in the Alps
Before tuning into Season 2, remember that the central characters change from season to season. However, Nicole Kidman’s character, Masha Dmitrichenko, is set to return as she was initially in charge of the Tranquillum House. Now that Ben and Jessica have taken over the Tranquillum House, Masha has moved to a new location – the Alps – where she now runs another retreat.
After Yao and Delilah left, Masha welcomed some fresh faces to aid her. Among these newcomers are Helena, who was once Masha’s therapist (portrayed by Lena Olin), and her son Martin (played by Lucas Englander). In the second season, details about the nine enigmatic strangers will gradually unfold, but their respective actors have already been announced. The ensemble also features Mark Strong, Christine Baranski, Annie Murphy, Murray Bartlett, Henry Golding, Dolly de Leon, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, King Princess, and Aras Aydin.
In the upcoming season, newcomers will face challenges distinct yet comparable to those of the Season 1 characters, enabling continuation of certain storylines. Prepare for at least one character to possess a deceased relative, offering Masha opportunities to explore hallucinogens and engage with the departed. Characters in this new season may also share ties that could shed light on Masha’s past, uncovering the mystery behind an individual’s death years ago at the Tranquillum House.
