Amy Heckerling’s film “Clueless,” released in 1995, is hailed as one of the finest movies from the ’90s and continues to be a source of memorable quotes. Not only did it establish Alicia Silverstone as an icon, but it also introduced many to the late Brittany Murphy. One of her co-stars recently reminisced about the vibrant spirit she infused into that cherished comedy.
Clueless, a standout High School film from the ’90s, offers a modern spin on Jane Austen’s Emma. Over time, this movie has proven to be timeless and filled with memorable lines. Actress Elisa Donovan, who portrayed Cher’s close friend-turned-foe Amber, recently shared her experiences working alongside Murphy in an interview with People. In her own words:
I frequently find myself preoccupied with Brittany. Whenever she’d enter the hair and makeup room, it was as if a whirlwind of energy swept in, causing everyone to fret, “Oh no, no, no, be careful with your hair!” But she was always confident, reassuring them, “Don’t worry, I’ve got this. I can fix it.” And then, without missing a beat, she’d dash out the door. Brittany was simply radiant with vitality.
You seem emotional; I’m just feeling moved.”
Regarding the second part, The impact of Brittany Murphy’s untimely death in 2009 at age 32 still resonates deeply among fans today. Her lively portrayal in Clueless (currently streaming on Paramount+) continues to remind us of the happiness she brought to the screen, which only adds to our lingering sorrow over her passing.

As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but echo the sentiments shared by Donovan when it comes to Brittany Murphy. Like many other “Clueless” alums, Breckin Meyer has publicly acknowledged her unique talent and warm-hearted nature. Her spirit was truly contagious, even if it occasionally led to a bit of trouble – such as the mischief she would sometimes get into in the makeup trailer during our time together on “Clueless”.

In the movie “Clueless,” Elisa Donovan portrayed a supporting character, and she later reprised her role in the TV adaptation. Regrettably, neither Brittany Murphy nor Alicia Silverstone took part in the television series, with Silverstone being replaced by Rachel Blanchard. However, Donovan is well-acquainted with the franchise, and continues to hold a deep affection for her deceased co-star.
Interestingly, the classic ’90s comedy is making a comeback! In April, news broke about a new TV adaptation of Clueless, with Alicia Silverstone set to reappear as Cher Horowitz. The original director, Amy Heckerling, is also involved in producing the upcoming TV spinoff. It remains to be seen if the adored character Tai Frasier, played by Brittany Murphy, will be mentioned in some way. I imagine that both fans and those behind the developing show would prioritize this.
In the meantime, before further details arrive about the upcoming TV show, you can catch up with “Clueless” again on Paramount+ for a re-watch. Here’s hoping we get the new series ahead of schedule… or at least not later than 2025.
