Underrated ’90s Gundam Movie Gets a Gorgeous New Musical Release

Hiroko Moriguchi, a renowned Japanese singer and Gundam icon, has unveiled a brand new music video for her rendition of “Eternal Winds,” the main theme from the 1991 film “Mobile Suit Gundam F91.” The video features a full band accompaniment with Moriguchi supplying the captivating vocals. This updated version of “Eternal Wind” will be included in “Gundam Song Covers –Orchestra–,” a new Gundam cover album by Moriguchi, marking her fourth such release in the series. Previously, she had released three “Gundam Song Covers” albums, where she performed music from the beloved franchise. The tracks on the first “Gundam Song Covers” were the top 10 most popular Gundam songs as determined by NHK’s Announcement All Gundam Big Vote in 2018.

The debut single of Moriguchi as a solo artist was “Mizu no Hoshi e Ai wo Komete,” released in 1985, which was featured as the second theme song for Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam. This song is one of the most recognized anime openings from the ’80s and was voted the best Gundam song in NHK’s Announcement All Gundam Big Vote poll. Moriguchi produced several new versions of “Mizu no Hoshi e Ai wo Komete,” including a contemporary adaptation for the first Gundam Song Covers, an a cappella rendition for her Aoi Inochi album, and a fusion song with Mami Ayukawa’s “Zeta – Toki wo Koete” (the opening theme of Zeta Gundam), blending both songs into one.

Since “Mizu no Hoshi e Ai wo Komete” by Moriguchi was chosen as the favorite Gundam song, it necessitated her to produce fresh interpretations of the top ten beloved Gundam songs for the debut Gundam Song Covers. Fortunately, this first collection turned out to be a major success, securing the third spot in Oricon’s Japanese Albums charts, the first position for anime Albums, and the fourth place on Billboard Japan’s Top Albums Sales, selling more than 130,000 copies. The initial album’s triumph prompted the release of Gundam Song Covers 2 and Gundam Song Covers 3, with the latter billed as the final album. However, Moriguchi unveiled plans for a fourth album in April, promising that she would be joined by a full orchestra when performing new versions of the songs.
