In a fresh turn of events for Marvel Comics, Gwen Stacy, who was previously thought to be deceased, is now back in the spotlight through the new Gwenpool series. This revived character is more menacing than ever, donning a sleek black suit and adopting an aggressive demeanor reminiscent of the ’90s. Unlike her former self as Peter Parker’s passionate but kind girlfriend, Gwen has transformed into a full-blown antagonist, determined to take on the unconventional trio consisting of Gwenpool, Hawkeye, and Spider-Man. The most alarming aspect, however, is that she now possesses extraordinary abilities granted by an enigmatic benefactor, one of which could potentially alter the entire Marvel Universe in a catastrophic manner.
Gwen is Back and Worse Than Ever
In the premiere issue of Gwenpool, we encountered the resurrected Gwen for the first time, who swiftly dismantled three assassins sent to challenge her by a mysterious figure known as the Architect, the one believed to have revived her. Following this incident, he informed her that her last trial before being released into the broader Marvel universe would involve eliminating three rogue Deathloks. However, Gwen vehemently objected to being referred to as Gwenpool, insisting that such a name should never be used for her.
In the heat of a fight alongside Hawkeye, Spider-Man, and an unusual character resembling Gwenpool, Gwen Stacy managed to locate her objectives. The trio had just successfully ousted the alien monster Fin Fang Foom from the city, but were quickly ambushed by these three newcomers immediately afterwards. These mechanical zombies had the heroes cornered at gunpoint, proclaiming that the era of heroes was over and a “Great Reboot” was imminent for the world. Gwen Stacy swiftly eliminated the would-be assailants, which understandably irritated the other heroes as she attempted to handle them herself. And let me tell you, she was more than prepared for the task at hand.
Gwen’s Powerset is Terrifying
From the brief actions and hints provided about the new Gwen Stacy character, it’s clear that she is expected to carry on the legacy of the Weapon X program in a spiritual sense. Essentially, she embodies the terrifying mix of Wolverine’s brutality and Deadpool’s unconventionality, amped up by her edgy persona. She boasts an advanced healing ability, adamantium claws as long as swords, and a firearm – which, while seeming excessive, is in line with the idea of an edgy Gwen Stacy reboot. Moreover, she demonstrates formidable combat skills, having easily subdued an injured Gwenpool without much effort.
Despite all other powers appearing insignificant, there’s one more ability that hasn’t been explicitly stated but seems evident throughout the issue. It appears that Gwen Stacy might possess a reality-warping power similar to Gwenpool’s, which could be highly dangerous if wielded by a villain. There are several indications supporting this theory, even though the writers haven’t officially acknowledged it yet.
One such clue is her attire. She wears a darker version of Gwenpool’s costume, intended to create parallels between the two characters. Additionally, this outfit serves as a camouflage for this powerful ability, as it helps divert attention away from this power since the costume also represents what people generally associate with Gwenpool.
Apart from other indications, the strongest proof lies in Spider-Man’s responses. When Gwenpool initially utilized her reality-bending to propel Fin Fang Foom into the upper atmosphere, Peter was bent over in agony as his Spider-Sense blared that something was amiss. This reaction recurred later in the comic when the mood turned dramatically darker, foreshadowing Gwen Stacy’s arrival. Peter appears to sense Gwenpool’s power that disrupts the fourth wall, and he reacted identically upon Gwen’s entrance. The Deathloks shouting about the “Great Reboot” suggest Fourth Wall manipulations are at play. The villains escaped from the enigmatic Architect, suggesting his involvement in the strange alteration of reality as we know it. It’s plausible that he is even the one who bestowed this power upon Gwen, turning her into a Gwenpool, so she could carry out his plan to annihilate superheroing altogether.
Gwen Stacy has transformed into a malevolent and deadly character, with the ability to potentially manipulate reality according to her desires. Despite my initial reservations, this new development has piqued my curiosity enough that I’ll be reading the next issue. The idea of a fight between two characters who seem to dance across comic panels as if playing hopscotch is an intriguing spectacle not easily missed.
