Neil Druckmann, head of Naughty Dog, hasn’t ruled out the possibility of The Last of Us Part 3. This beloved PlayStation franchise, with its multiple re-releases on PS4, PS5, and PC, continues to draw new audiences. Its longevity in pop culture for over a decade, combined with the successful HBO TV adaptation of The Last of Us, has fueled curiosity among many. However, despite this popularity, there have only been two games released in the series over the past 12 years.

Instead of having multiple sequels churned out by another developer, Naughty Dog has opted for quality over quantity with The Last of Us series. Although it’s been five years since the last installment and fans are eagerly awaiting a third game, there have been some mixed signals about its development. Creator Neil Druckmann initially hinted at a third game a year ago, expressing his belief that there was one more story to tell in that world with those characters. However, more recently, Druckmann seemed to retract those statements, causing some uncertainty among fans. Nevertheless, he has consistently left the door open for a potential third game, which we can now confirm is still on the horizon.

The Last of Us Part 3 May Still Happen

On the Sacred Symbols podcast, Neil Druckmann confirmed that his statements made in the ‘Making of The Last of Us Part 2’ documentary still hold true. In this documentary, he had hinted at the possibility of a third game and shared some ideas about potential directions for the storyline. However, he emphasized that any further installment would only be produced if they could ensure top-notch quality and is not in a hurry to begin the project immediately.

Druckmann stated, “What I expressed in the documentary was sincere. As the guardian of this franchise, I prioritize quality over quantity. I aim to be deliberate and thoughtful about every creation we produce. When we collaborated on a theme park attraction with Universal and top professionals, it was to ensure that our Halloween haunted house was exceptional. Similarly, when we partnered with HBO’s best television creators for the show, we aimed to create the finest adaptation of The Last of Us. If given another chance, I would want to return only if the story is worthy of The Last of Us. I cherish that world and those characters, and under the right circumstances, with a compelling concept, I’d be more than eager to revisit it.

It’s reassuring to learn that Druckmann is owning up to his past statements and making it clear they still hold true. However, it seems like such a game might not be released for some time yet. Currently, Naughty Dog is working on two projects, one of them being Druckmann’s creation, Intergalactic. This is why we don’t see a third game at the moment as he’s dedicated to this upcoming sci-fi title. There are rumors that another game in development could potentially be a new Uncharted installment, but nothing has been officially announced yet.

If The Last of Us Online hadn’t been canceled, the wait for the next game in the series would have been less agonizing. Although it was a multiplayer game, it promised to deliver a narrative and an experience that felt like watching a movie. In today’s gaming world where games like Destiny offer regular expansions packed with story elements, such a game, even if not at Naughty Dog’s level, wouldn’t be hard to imagine.
