In light of Sony’s ongoing focus on live services, the developers of PlayStation’s game Returnal, Housemarque, have expressed their commitment to prioritizing single-player and premium gaming experiences for now, as far as the immediate future is concerned.
During a recent conversation with Eurogamer at an event celebrating the Finnish developer’s 30th anniversary, the company leaders IIari Kuittinen (CEO) and Gregory Louden (Creative Director) clarified their intention to continue producing premium games as long as there is demand for them. They also confirmed that a new standalone adventure titled Saros is already set for release in 2026.
This idea ties back to the studio’s belief that their games offer an “immersive episode from your lifetime.” Instead of devoting “endless hours” to one game, they advocate for players to engage with their creations within a “few days, weeks, or as much time as needed,” similar to enjoying “movies or TV shows.
Kuittinen states, “It offers a one-of-a-kind encounter. Once experienced, it leaves an impact. You might revisit it, but it doesn’t require ongoing involvement or playing it throughout your lifetime.
The team aims to sustain this positive energy into the future, spanning over many years, yet acknowledges that its strength lies in its most recent performance. It continues to rely on its audience and players in general to maintain their enthusiasm for such high-quality gaming adventures.
Despite Housemarque maintaining a strong vision, Sony’s live service division has faced another setback over the past week. The upcoming game Fairgame$ is in turmoil following the departure of its studio founder Jade Raymond, sparked by internal concerns. This recent event comes after a tumultuous 2024 for Sony’s live service games, where they experienced the high point of Helldivers 2’s success followed closely by Concord, which was prematurely closed down only weeks after its release and was labeled a total failure.
