It’s fast becoming the year of Rose Ayling-Ellis.
After her moving documentary Old Hands New Tricks, an appearance on Doctor Who, and a notable role in BBC’s popular crime drama Reunion, the winner of Strictly Come Dancing starred as Alison Brooks, a Deaf canteen worker at a police station with exceptional lip-reading abilities. This skill propels her quickly into the crime surveillance unit and eventually into a perilous undercover operation, all on ITVX’s Code of Silence.
What transpired regarding the jewelry heist that she was tasked with thwarting, and did she elope with the roguish character she became overly attached to? Let’s delve into the captivating events that unfolded in the climactic finale.
Code of Silence ending explained
Did Ben survive the shooting?
In the last episode, Alison discovers that Liam, the youngest member of the jewel thieving gang and her possible romantic interest (played by Kieron Moore), has uncovered her identity as a police informant through hacking her hearing aid. Additionally, she realizes that she had been intentionally misled about the location of the heist. Instead of taking place at the ultra-secure vault, it was happening at the luxurious country hotel where they recently shared an intimate moment and deepened their relationship.
Unfortunately, Alison’s tendency to disobey higher authority resulted in a devastating outcome. Ignoring instructions to stay outside until aid was available, she ventured into the venue at the same time Liam was attempting to retrieve the £5 million necklace from the laundry chute. This coincided with Braden (played by Joe Absolom), who had been tricked and was armed, becoming increasingly aggressive on the staircase and opening fire.
Amidst the chaos, a nameless security guard meets his end, while DC Ben (Nathan Armarkwei Laryea) is wounded by gunfire. Ignoring Alison’s entreaties, Liam presses on with his task, and we witness him heading off into the darkness with the jewels beside him.
Fortunately, following a tense ordeal, Ben manages to make it through the shooting incident. Not surprisingly, Alison’s partner is far from pleased when she shows up at the hospital, scolding her in the hallway for getting overly involved and potentially endangering Ben’s life. However, this doesn’t stop Alison from flouting the rules.
The reunion
As I lay low at the designated sanctuary, a seemingly ordinary Chinese takeout delivery arrived, concealing a covert phone device. The message was cryptic: ‘the same rendezvous as before.’ My heart racing, I swiftly slipped past my police escort and found myself in an underground parking garage, reconnecting with Liam.
As I pondered over their mutual deceits, Liam proposed an escape – a fresh start in Brazil with him as our very own Clyde, and me, Bonnie. However, the thought of a life forever eluding justice was unappealing to me. So, with a courteous refusal, I parted ways from him. Yet, that separation didn’t last long.
Upon heading back to her workplace to gather additional information, Alison was abducted by a psychopathic Braden. He subsequently called Liam, threatening him with a chilling ultimatum: either return the jewels he had selfishly kept, or face the dire consequence of his girlfriend being harmed.
What was Liam’s motive?

Concurrently, Detective Inspector Marsh (Andrew Buchan) has been diligently working to uncover Liam’s true identity and understand what led him to turn against them. A previous conversation with Alison seemed to suggest that Liam Barlow was actually Liam Gray, the cherished foster son of a man who met his end at the hands of the gang during an earlier heist.
Despite the shooter being apprehended and jailed, Liam felt it was necessary for Braden and Helen (Beth Goddard) to face consequences too. He utilized his IT abilities to infiltrate one of their past ransomware attacks and also helped bring down another accomplice. With this access, he managed to win their trust, which eventually led him to assume a crucial role in their upcoming nefarious plan. “Money is the only thing that truly matters to Helen and Braden,” Liam confided in Alison, “and I realized that was the best way to inflict harm on them.
Helen, a property developer, initially denied any involvement in the heist when Marsh and Detective Inspector Francis (played by Charlotte Ritchie) interrogated her. She stated that she had only known Braden as an old business associate of her ex-husband’s whom she had declined a proposal from. However, her innocence was short-lived due to a clever move from the gang’s most treacherous member.
The final showdown

In a surprising turn of events, Liam shows that he may not be as terrible as people thought when he sets up a ride for him to the warehouse, where he trades the jewels for Alison’s life on Helen’s behalf. Remarkably, Braden keeps his part of the bargain. Yet, instead of letting Alison go free, he callously intends to kill her love interest. However, before he can carry out this act, the police, whom Liam had warned earlier, storm into the room just as they are about to shoot.
Prior to their arrests, Braden and Helen were involved in numerous shady dealings. Consequently, both of them find themselves serving extended prison sentences. Later on, it’s disclosed that Holhurst (Andrew Scarborough) was indicted for money laundering as well. However, the fate of the love-struck pair remains undisclosed.
Two months later, Liam confesses to conspiracy in a robbery case. Alison’s attendance at the trial hints that she might be waiting for him upon his release. However, she now has a new home with her mother and a £50,000 reward for her assistance. Additionally, with some motivation from Marsh, Alison may have an opportunity to pursue a full-time career as a forensic lip reader. Could there be a second season coming up?
