Washington Black chronicles the journey of George Washington ‘Wash’ Black, an 11-year-old boy residing on a Barbados sugar plantation, whose exceptional intellect steers him towards an unforeseen fate, as suggested by the series summary.
As a terrifying event causes Wash to escape, he embarks on a worldwide journey that tests and transforms his perception of family, liberty, and affection.
In the face of unknown territories and seemingly insurmountable challenges, Wash discovers the strength to envision a life beyond the limitations of his birthplace’s societal norms.
In the leading roles alongside Brown are Ernest Kingsley Jr., Rupert Graves, Iola Evans, Edward Bluemel, Sharon Duncan Brewster, Eddie Karanja, and Tom Ellis.
This groundbreaking novel has earned significant recognition, claiming the 2018 Scotiabank Giller Prize, being nominated for the Booker Prize, the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize, and the 2019 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Outstanding Achievement in Fiction.
Executive producer and showrunner Kimberly Ann Harrison shared with Entertainment Weekly that she had not previously encountered a narrative perspective from a young, enslaved character.
