Samsung is Helping Manufacture Nintendo Switch 2 Chips on 8nm Node – Rumour

It’s no secret that the release of Nintendo Switch 2 is one of the most eagerly awaited gaming events this year. Given the high anticipation for the console, it seems Nintendo has predicted a massive demand for it, and recent reports suggest that they will collaborate with Samsung to produce more Switch 2 units. As per Bloomberg’s report, Samsung is expected to fabricate chips for the Switch 2 using its 8-nanometer node technology.

Based on unconfirmed reports, it’s suggested that Samsung might assist Nintendo in producing more chips for the Switch 2, allowing Nintendo to have approximately 20 million units of the console available by March 2026. Additionally, this partnership could enable Samsung to strengthen its chip manufacturing divisions, enabling them to compete more effectively with TSMC, a leading global chip manufacturer, on a broader scale.

According to the report, it seems that Samsung’s collaboration with Nintendo might extend beyond chip manufacturing. Notably, Samsung has also produced memory modules for Nintendo, but recent rumors suggest that Samsung is attempting to persuade Nintendo to adopt OLED displays in future versions of the Switch console.

In a recent financial report, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa announced that they aim to sell 15 million units of the upcoming Switch 2. During a discussion with investors, he hinted at potentially increasing the console’s price based on changes in US tariffs for imported goods. However, for now, their primary focus is on increasing the console’s popularity.

Currently, our main focus is to rapidly spread the new Switch 2 gaming hardware, as stated by Furukawa. However, if there are any substantial changes in tariff assumptions, we will evaluate necessary price modifications and implement them carefully, taking into account multiple factors beforehand.

As a devoted fan, I can empathize with Furukawa’s perspective. He mentioned that the cautious sales projection for the Switch 2 is partly due to Nintendo being mindful of the potential challenge posed by its higher price compared to its predecessor. In simpler terms, he acknowledged that the increased cost of the Switch 2 could pose obstacles in its initial market penetration. “Given the elevated price point of the Switch 2 over the original Switch,” he stated, “we understand that widespread adoption during the console’s early stages will not be an easy feat.

Regarding manufacturing batches leading to stock scarcities, Furukawa stated that it’s largely not a concern. He announced that the projected sales for the Nintendo Switch 2 in the current fiscal year are set at 15 million units. This number is derived from a target mirroring the sales of the original Nintendo Switch during the ten-month span from its launch in March 2017 until the end of December that same year.
