Viewers are eagerly consuming the most recent Danish miniseries. In response, the streaming service has increased its investment in international content, which has seen a surge in popularity on their platform.
Among the recent releases, “Secrets We Keep” has quickly become one of the most popular Danish thrillers. This new binge-worthy series made its debut on Netflix on May 15 and immediately garnered a perfect score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, drawing in more viewers right away. Not long after its release, this series shot to the top of the non-English TV charts. (According to reports)
During the span from May 12th through May 18th, the series Secrets We Keep garnered a total of 10.3 million views and was watched for a grand total of 38.6 million hours. This impressive viewership allowed it to rank number one in various countries, as it entered the Top 10 listings in 82 different nations and even claimed the top spot in 28 of them.
The Danish miniseries, either known as “Secret We Keep” or its original title “Reservatet“, is a great fit for those who enjoy similar Netflix series such as “Hold Tight“.
Ingeborg Topsøe, known for the series “Hanna”, was the one who initially conceived it. This production was overseen by Per Fly, renowned for his work on “Borgen”. The script was a collaborative effort between Topsøe, Ina Bruhn (from “Darkness: Those Who Kill”), and Mads Tafdrup.
The main cast includes Marie Bach Hansen (“The Legacy”), Simon Sears (“Shadow and Bone”), Lars Ranthe (“Another Round”), Danica Curcic (“The Chestnut Man”), and Excel Busano.
In the “rich people are not always kind” subgenre, a young Filipino woman working as an au pair in one of Denmark’s most affluent neighborhoods in Copenhagen mysteriously vanishes, with many showing little concern for her fate. However, one persistent individual sets out to uncover the truth about her disappearance, ultimately unearthing more secrets about the seemingly perfect neighbors.
The show isn’t directly inspired by real events, but it does depict some genuine power dynamics within families. Denmark indeed has an au pair culture, and the workers in this setting are typically from the Philippines. When asked about her inspiration, the series creator Topsøe stated, “I have always been intrigued by the power dynamics within a family. Many people might not connect Denmark with such ‘Upstairs, Downstairs’ households. Denmark is often perceived as an extremely egalitarian society, and I haven’t seen homes like these on TV before.
She went on to say, “Maybe it’s something we prefer not to admit exists. Au pairs are considered family members during their employment, yet parents can unintentionally be distant. These stark truths, concealed under a blanket of kindness, spark my curiosity.
Netflix’s New Crime Series Was a Hit With the Critics
Right after its premiere, the show garnered a perfect 100% rating from critics, who heaped praises upon it, likening it to other critically-adored series such as ‘Adolescence’ or ‘The White Lotus’.
As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I have to admit that the initial response to the Danish crime drama wasn’t an immediate standing ovation. However, it didn’t take long for subscribers to flock to it and binge-watch it. On my personal Popcornmeter, it rates at 76%, which is certainly a promising start!
