PlayStation Showcase, State of Play Event for May Appears Increasingly Unlikely

Over the past few years of the PS5 era, it has become customary for PlayStation enthusiasts to anticipate a digital event from Sony in May. Typically, they organize either a “PlayStation Showcase” or a “State of Play” during this period annually since 2019. However, there are growing indications that Sony might break away from this tradition in the year 2025.

Based on what NateDrake, a highly trustworthy source on the ResetEra forum, has shared, it appears that Sony hasn’t provided any information about a May event this year. However, it’s always possible that a livestream could be scheduled and NateDrake’s contacts might not yet be aware of those specific plans.

This individual, who has a history of accurate predictions about gaming releases like the unveiling of the Nintendo Switch 2’s online service and the planning of PS5 ports by Microsoft (as seen in the release of Forza Horizon 5 and Gears of War), seems reliable. There’s little reason to question their future predictions.

It would be rather disappointing if Sony didn’t hold any livestream during their usual summer gaming announcements, but given the upcoming releases, it wouldn’t be entirely unexpected. For instance, Death Stranding 2 is just around the corner, and Marathon has been a letdown for hardcore gamers. As for Ghost of Yotei, its release plans have already been revealed.

Actually, that last point might be one of the primary reasons causing uncertainty about the event. Announcing the release date for Ghost of Yotei would have been perfect to end a State of Play broadcast. However, Sony chose to unexpectedly reveal it during a typical Wednesday afternoon last month instead.

As a gamer, I’m excited about upcoming games like Marvel’s Wolverine and Saros, but if Sony can’t showcase them again, it might be challenging for them to gather enough exclusive content to make a livestream worthwhile. Historically, PlayStation Showcases have been filled with first-party titles, while State of Play events focus more on third-party games, occasionally unveiling something from PlayStation Studios.

Despite the absence of an in-house event like a Sony showcase next month, it doesn’t necessarily mean that we won’t hear about new PS5 exclusives. Last year’s Summer Game Fest livestream showed us that Sony is open to sharing some reveals with Geoff Keighley, as he announced LEGO Horizon Adventures on his stage.
