Back in 2006, the original Oblivion was a clear success when it was released, setting numerous new benchmarks for the open RPG genre. Yet, the acclaim for its initial launch appears to have been largely eclipsed by Oblivion Remastered, nearly two decades down the line.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve got to say, the sudden arrival of the PS5, following months of whispers and speculation, has been nothing short of phenomenal! Seems like it’s been a massive hit in the US market.
According to Circana analyst Mat Piscatella, the recently released remastered version, which functions more like a remake, was the top-selling game of the month. Moreover, it currently ranks third in terms of sales for 2025, trailing only Monster Hunter Wilds and Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
Additionally, it held the top spot as the most popular game on all individual platforms, which include PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC.
However, here’s an intriguing fact: According to Piscatella, Remastered surpassed the initial 15-month sales of the original Oblivion within just a week or so.
Initially, there were numerous elements contributing to its success. To begin with, when Oblivion debuted, Bethesda wasn’t yet the widely recognized developer they are now. However, it was precisely Oblivion that catapulted the company into prominence for many gamers worldwide.
Moreover, the influence of nostalgia should not be overlooked. Over time since its release, Oblivion has sold countless copies, and undoubtedly, those who purchased and appreciated it would express interest in the Remastered version.
Personally, I find the “shadow drop” strategy intriguing for today’s gaming world. The unexpected release of a renowned game, with minimal pre-hype (except for those inevitable leaks), creates an instant buzz that really stands out amidst projects that are often announced years before they hit the shelves.
