Since the fearsome Tyrannosaurus rex made its iconic appearance in Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park back in 1993, this awe-inspiring beast has been the symbol of the franchise, even featuring in the logo as a fossilized image. Known as “Rexy,” the T. rex star of Isla Nublar became a household name following her cinematic debut. In the final installment of the trilogy, Jurassic World Dominion (2022), Rexy was last seen alongside Buck and Doe, the T. rex mates from Isla Sorna, within a Biosyn sanctuary. The original 30-year-old T. rex and its on-screen companions, Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern, and Sam Neill, bid farewell to the Jurassic Park franchise together in this trilogy finale.
The upcoming fourth installment in the “Jurassic World” series, titled “Jurassic World: Rebirth,” signals a fresh start for the franchise. Notably, Gareth Edwards, known for directing “Godzilla” and “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” takes the helm this time. The film also introduces new characters, portrayed by Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali, and a new island, serving as a research facility for the original Jurassic Park. As expected, there will be newly created dinosaurs as well.
Apart from genetically altered dinosaurs such as the Mutadons and the Distortus Rex, which resulted from failed genetic experiments, Rebirth showcases classic species like the Dilophosaurus, Spinosaurus, and Pteranodon. Additionally, this movie introduces new characters to the franchise, including the Aquilops, the Titanosaurus, and a new strain of Tyrannosaurus rex that has become the main attraction. This updated version of T. rex is featured prominently in promotional materials and even makes an appearance in a dramatic scene from the trailer where it attacks a family on a river raft (a scene inspired by Michael Crichton’s 1990 novel, which was initially excluded from the 1993 film Jurassic Park).
David Koepp, who wrote Jurassic Park and The Lost World, remarks on the T. rex raft scene in the latest issue of Empire Magazine. He recalls telling Steven Spielberg, the executive producer, “Hey, now we can make this happen!” As he revisited the novel, he was reminded of its brilliance and insisted, “We need to include this.” The reason being, the T. rex scene is a fantastic idea and if any dinosaur character should return, it has to be the T. rex.
In “Jurassic World: Reborn”, the T. rex is depicted as being larger, more muscular, and even more grumpy compared to the one from “Jurassic Park”. This particular Tyrannosaur is a distinct breed that has not appeared in any of the six movies previously shown.
In simpler terms, if dinosaurs were making a movie, they wouldn’t refer to humans as ‘another human’ repeatedly, as explained by Edwards. Instead, they would recognize famous actors like Robert De Niro and Javier Bardem, just as we do when we see them in a film. Similarly, the original T-rex in Jurassic Park is like one actor on set, and now there’s another one.
The larger model of Rex, much like the “Bull T-rex” figure from Kenner’s Jurassic Park toy series in 1997, was inspired by another source, as explained by Edwards: a 1969 film titled “The Valley of Gwangi”, which showcased stop-motion dinosaur effects by Ray Harryhausen, the mastermind behind Dynamation’s “The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad” and “Jason and the Argonauts”.
In contrast to the Rexy design by Mark McCreery, which sought to be accurate based on input from paleontologists and paleoartists, Edwards aimed for his new T. rex model to reflect the general perception of T. rexes prior to our more recent understanding.
Edwards stated that they drew inspiration from certain designs in Ray Harryhausen’s films, such as “The Valley of Gwangi,” and he noted that the Rexy from the initial Jurassic Park was almost flawless. He went on to say that the T-rex in Rebirth resembles how he, as a child, imagined a T-rex, and he is incredibly pleased with it.
The movie titled “Jurassic World Rebirth” featuring Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, Mahershala Ali, Rupert Friend, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Luna Blaise, David Iacono, Audrina Miranda, along with Philippine Velge, Bechir Sylvain, and Ed Skrein hits theaters on July 2.
