Portrayed by Nicholas Hoult, this Lex Luthor appears to stay true to the iconic DC Comics villain, harboring intense animosity towards Superman. Based on the latest trailer, I feel confident that I have a fair understanding of Luthor’s intentions moving forward.
In the previews for James Gunn’s Superman, we see an array of antagonists set to challenge the Man of Steel. Interestingly, some of these villains seem linked to Lex Luthor, particularly Ultraman and The Engineer. Despite this, scenes from Superman trailers suggest that Lex Luthor and his cohorts are gathering at a crucial site, which may not offer kryptonite but potentially another substance capable of causing Superman equivalent harm.
We Know Lex Luthor Is Going To Break Into Superman’s Fortress

Although the Fortress of Solitude is typically a secluded haven only for Kal-El and his closest associates, sneak peeks at upcoming Superman films suggest that Lex Luthor, Ultraman, and The Engineer have somehow managed to infiltrate its walls. However, it seems that Krypto the Super Dog and the robotic assistants will offer resistance, as Superman himself is conspicuously absent during this intrusion. This is hinted at by other footage showing Superman inside the Fortress with the wreckage of one of his robots.
Based on this information, it seems clear that Lex makes his way into the Fortress, and given how effortlessly it appears in the trailers when he says, “He’s not a man. He’s an ‘it’ who’s somehow become the center of discussion for everyone worldwide.
Theory: Lex Luthor Will Expose Superman’s Alien Status To The World
It Might Have Been A Secret Before The First DCU Movie
Lex Luthor’s remarks within the Fortress hint that Superman being referred to as an “It” might imply a fresh revelation regarding Kal-El’s alien origins, which could potentially be disclosed to the public in the future. Since James Gunn’s Superman movie isn’t going to retell his origin story, it is set early on in Superman’s career. Given that Lex Luthor learns this secret after visiting the Fortress for the first time, it fits well. This could explain why there are queries elsewhere in the trailer about Superman’s loyalties and whether he serves the interests of the United States or not.
It’s not unusual in the DCU that Superman seems to have human traits with superpowers. Characters like Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, Mister Terrific, and others first appeared alongside Superman. So, it’s possible that people assumed Superman was just another human, at least until the Man of Steel might be unmasked by Lex Luthor. This could explain why Superman was depicted being arrested.

This scenario could lead to a moment where Superman is forced to accept and integrate both aspects of his being – Clark Kent and Kal-El – once the truth is exposed. Although this is mere speculation before the film’s debut, I am convinced that uncovering Superman’s alien identity might be Lex Luthor’s ultimate goal in this upcoming movie.
