A day after causing a stir among the Borderlands fan community by suggesting that dedicated fans could find a way to purchase Borderlands 4 even at a $80 price point, Gearbox head Randy Pitchford has issued an apology on social media. In response to a fan’s comment likening Pitchford’s previous statement to something the antagonist Handsome Jack from Borderlands 2 might say, Pitchford acknowledged that he did not mean to disrespect or underestimate the value of the franchise’s supporters with his remarks.
Gosh, JackGPT, does that sound like me? My apologies, but kudos to Duke_Newcombe and @MoxsyOG for the funniest thing I’ll read today, echoing Handsome Jack’s style,” Pitchford wrote in response.
To put it frankly, I don’t enjoy being underappreciated, and that certainly wasn’t my intention. However, I am deeply moved by the affection and encouragement that you all have showered upon our team as they strive tirelessly to bring this fantastic game to you. They are truly excelling, and I can hardly wait for you to experience what will undoubtedly be the greatest Borderlands yet! Regardless of the final price tag, it will be more than worth it. Now, back to work for me!
The entire story unfolded when, in response to a fan of Borderlands on X, Pitchford stated that he didn’t decide the game’s price. Previously, he shared an anecdote about having to save from his minimum wage earnings to afford an $80 copy of Starfighter for the Sega Genesis in 1991.
If you’re a true enthusiast, you’ll manage to make it work,” he wrote. “Back in 1991, shortly after graduating from high school, I was working minimum wage at an ice cream shop in Pismo Beach. Yet, I managed to find a way to buy Starflight for Sega Genesis, which cost $80 at my local game store.
It’s not surprising that Pitchford’s post didn’t sit well with Borderlands fans. Some mocked his claims about gatekeeping the franchise based on wealth, while others highlighted ongoing economic difficulties in various parts of the world.
The highly-anticipated game titled “Borderlands 4” is being crafted for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. Set to launch on September 12, this action-packed title has been in development for a remarkable six years. In a recent video update about the Switch 2 version of “Borderlands 4“, Gearbox’s creative chief Randy Varnell shared that soon after the release of “Borderlands 3“, the team began focusing on expanding the “Borderlands” universe with exciting adventures.
As you anticipate the upcoming installment of the cooperative loot-shooter series, you might also want to watch a gameplay trailer that was recently released. This video offers glimpses into the multiple travel options the game will provide and potential insights into its narrative.
Boy howdy, JackGPT, is that how I sound? My bad, but cheers to Duke_Newcombe and @MoxsyOG for the funniest thing I’m going to read today!
In seriousness though, nobody likes being taken for granted and it was not my intent. I’m humbled by the love and support everyone has shown…— Randy Pitchford (@DuvalMagic) May 22, 2025
