The Hilarious Western Classic Returns: 48 Years Later, One Actor is Back!

One of the most hilarious Western films ever produced, initially released over five decades ago, underwent a modern-day reinterpretation, and remarkably, one of the original actors resurfaced in his iconic role. Surprisingly, the film they remade is a title that numerous fans and scholars have deemed unsuitable for remaking in today’s cultural climate. The classic movie was none other than Blazing Saddles, directed by Mel Brooks and premiered in 1974. This recent adaptation, released as an animated production, features a dog arriving in a town to rescue it from an antagonistic cat.

In a humorous take on the classic Western genre, the movie “Blazing Saddles” revolves around a railroad project that is planned to pass through a tiny Western settlement. The attorney general dispatches thugs to drive out the locals, hoping to profit from the influx of cash brought by the railroad. Faced with this situation, the townsfolk plead for a new sheriff to be appointed. To their surprise, and in an attempt to undermine the town’s prospects, the governor selects Bart, a seemingly inept Black railway laborer, as the new sheriff. Fast forward to 2022, the animated film “Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank” shares a comparable tale.

2022’s Paws Of Fury Was A Loose Remake Of Blazing Saddles

An Inexperienced Sheriff Has To Save A Town Who Hates Him

The movie titled “Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank” narrates the journey of a canine aspiring to become a samurai, with the aim of rescuing a feline village from an unethical landlord. During its production phase, it was initially known as “Blazing Samurai,” reflecting its obvious inspiration. Unlike “Blazing Saddles“, which is set in the Wild West, “Paws of Fury” unfolds in a cat village reminiscent of feudal Japan, given that both Western and Samurai films exhibit similar narrative elements in their storytelling.

In “Blazing Saddles,” a town’s value rises due to railway expansion, while in “Paws of Fury,” Ika Chu, a top official, aims to expand his palace and eliminates the neighboring town for space. Both stories depict the use of thugs to harass townspeople into leaving their homes. Unlike the Black railroad worker made sheriff in a bigoted town in “Blazing Saddles,” a dog is assigned as the sheriff in a town inhabited by cats, breaking the stereotype.

Mel Brooks Plays The Same Role In Both Blazing Saddles & Paws Of Fury

Mel Brooks Plays The Governor & The Shogun

In the movie “Blazing Saddles,” Mel Brooks not only takes on the director’s role but also plays multiple characters. Among these roles, Governor William J. Le Petomane is his most prominent one. This governor tends to be unaware of events unfolding around him and is frequently manipulated by the malicious Attorney General, Hedley Lamarr (portrayed by Harvey Korman). It was this governor who issued the order appointing Bart (played by Cleavon Little) as sheriff, a move that Lamarr thought would aid in the town’s destruction, given its predominantly racist inhabitants.

In the animated film “Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank,” I found myself delighted as Mel Brooks reprised his iconic role of Shogun Toshi, a character he previously played in “Blazing Saddles.” As the movie’s protagonist, Hank, a beagle voiced by Michael Cera, aspires to become a samurai and is appointed the sheriff of a feline village. Remakes are a favorite in Hollywood, but they’re not just copies; they’re tributes or reinterpretations. To be more precise, there are numerous aspects drawn from the original work… This provides us with a multitude of possibilities to declare, ‘We have the narrative and these characters, and we’re going to use them in a manner similar to Mel Brooks’ filmmaking style. Our aim is to enrich the story and make each moment delightful.’

To set the record straight, I’d like to mention that although “Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank” bears the names of the screenwriters behind “Blazing Saddles,” it’s essential to remember that these two movies are distinct entities. While “Blazing Saddles” paved the way, “Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank” carves its unique niche as a family-friendly spinoff.
