This philosophical series explores the question: To what extent does one’s identity revolve around their memories? Throughout its two-season narrative, it has presented several intriguing plot developments.
One significant surprise unfolded when it was revealed that the office worker known as Helly R was none other than Helena Eagan, one of the Eagans who control the enigmatic corporation Lumon Industries. In another gripping turn of events in Season 2, the character believed to be Helly R turned out to be Helena, assuming the identity of the “innie” she shares a body with. Since then, whenever she appears on screen, viewers are left pondering: is this Helly or is this Helena?
In the climactic episode of the season, it was noticeable that Mark S., played by Adam Scott, decided to depart with Helly and abandon his spouse Gemma, portrayed by Dichen Lachman. Helly’s expression towards Gemma seemed ambiguous, and it appeared that Mark didn’t fall in love with Helly as we saw, but rather with Helena. However, what are Britt Lower’s thoughts on the matter?
Recently, Lower clarified any confusion surrounding the Helly/Helena theories during an interview. When asked if perhaps the showrunners had misled her about which version of her character she portrayed, she humorously dismissed any hint of deceit, stating, “There’s no secret strategy in our Severance collaboration.
She elaborated that the entire finale of Season 2 was intended as a demonstration. In Season 1, Helena told Helly that she wasn’t a person and had no say over her own body. Helly felt disconnected from the significance of the tasks they were performing on the Lumon floor. She expressed, “I find absolutely no significance in what we’re doing here. I want out at any cost, even if it risks my life.” The central question of Season 1 was about Helly’s identity in relation to this work that held no importance for her.
She continued, “Gradually, she’s creating this selected family with Irving, Dylan, and Mark. The bond she shares with these individuals she cherishes is the central theme of Season 2. Now that these characters have gained new insights about their identities, it only fuels their desire for purpose and significance in their lives. When you see her at the end, seated on the tri-desk, declaring, ‘They give us half a life and think we won’t fight for it?’ I find it hard to imagine anyone else expressing that sentiment so powerfully.“
Lower Will Be Back For Season 3
Enthusiasm runs high among viewers, eagerly awaiting the arrival of the upcoming season of Severance. Fans are optimistic that the gap between seasons will be less this time compared to the long wait between seasons one and two. The Hollywood Reporter couldn’t help but inquire from Lower if she could share any insights into where Helly’s narrative might head next.
She admitted she knows nothing about the upcoming season, but wishes she did. Instead, she shared that she’s just as eager to discover what happens next with the characters as everyone else, and her mind wanders just as much as ours might, imagining where they could go and what they might be thinking. There is currently no announced release date for Season 3.
Severance is streaming on Apple TV+.
