Fountain of Youth – APPLE TV+

Between his popular gangster films for the elderly and television shows, director Guy Ritchie also creates more family-friendly productions like Aladdin (a massive box office hit) and King Arthur (a flop at the box office). Following this trend is ‘Fountain of Youth‘, a movie where adventurer Luke Purdue, played by John Krasinski, and his estranged, recently divorced, and respected art historian sister Charlotte, portrayed by Natalie Portman, join forces.

No matter where Luke travels, trouble seems to be his constant companion, and this time it’s Esme (Eiza Gonzalez), leading a gang of criminals hired by The Leader (Stanley Tucci). They are in hot pursuit of whatever artifact Luke obtains for himself, in this case, a collection of six valuable paintings by famous artists. It turns out that Owen Carver (Domhnall Gleeson) has enlisted Luke’s help because he believes these paintings hold clues to the location of the Fountain of Youth, which could potentially cure his terminal illness. Their journey also includes the search for The Wicked Bible, not the kind of wicked one might associate with a rapper, but rather an early misprinted version of the King James Bible that contained the error “Thou shalt commit adultery.” Unlike its usual location, this rare edition of the Wicked Bible is hidden within a secure library instead of Boris Johnson’s bedside table. As if dealing with Esme and her team isn’t enough, Luke must also watch out for Jamal Abbas (Arian Moayed), who poses as a Special Inspector, although not in the same way people view Brooklyn Beckham as being ‘special.’

This narrative unfolds as a thrilling journey across Thailand, Austria, and Egypt, reminiscent of both Indiana Jones and National Treasure. Among its many exciting sequences, one standout scene takes place aboard a shipwreck that Luke and his team successfully raise to the surface using barrage balloons, only for them to explode in a gunfight with Esme, causing the wreck to sink once more.

In Ritchie’s film, Ritchie has brought together a strong cast, particularly featuring a pleasant dynamic between the eccentric Krasinski and the frustrated Portman. Even more captivating is the connection between Krasinski and Gonzalez, as their simmering romance, despite being enemies who attempt to eliminate each other, makes them an intriguing match for a marriage.

The movie “Fountain of Youth” draws heavy inspiration from the Indiana Jones series, much like the start features a car chase accompanied by a Chinese rendition of Nancy Sinatra’s ‘Bang, Bang,’ reminiscent of the opening nightclub scene in ‘Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom’ with its Cantonese version of ‘Anything Goes.’ Ritchie’s characteristic stylistic touches are evident in numerous clever edit points between scenes as well as a slow-motion fight synchronized to Verdi’s Requiem II. Despite the obvious similarities to Indiana Jones, Krasinski manages to make the character of Luke Porter uniquely his own and presents an appealing screen presence in this delightfully spirited adventure.
