Originally designed for the initial Nintendo Switch, it’s been disclosed that Mario Kart World is actually a game destined for an earlier model, although it will now be featured as the premier title for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.
In the most recent Q&A session titled “Ask the Developer,” it was disclosed by Mario Kart World’s programming head, Kenta Sato, that at first, the plan was for the game to debut as a launch title on the Nintendo Switch.
In the process of designing games for the Nintendo Switch, we found ourselves having to make tough choices because there was only so much we could include. This meant that we always kept in mind the trade-offs we were making.
In our conversation, we explored options such as softening the images, reducing image quality, and even pondered slowing down the video speed to 30 frames per second at times. It proved to be quite challenging.
Originally designed for the Wii U, the latest Mario Kart game, named Mario Kart 8, subsequently made its appearance on the Nintendo Switch under the title Mario Kart 8 Deluxe upon the console’s release.
As a passionate gamer, I’ve come to learn that the seeds for our upcoming game, World, were sown following the successful launch of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the Nintendo Switch. However, as time progressed and we looked ahead towards 2020, it was decided that this project would be optimized to transform it into a title exclusively for the rumored Switch 2 system.
As a gamer, I’ve been delaying the tough decisions, pushing them back one by one. We all knew that eventually, things were bound to get complicated because we hadn’t yet decided what we had to let go of in our project. This is what producer Kosuke Yabuki was trying to convey.
He clarified that the Booster Course Pass for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe served as a bridge for Nintendo Switch 1 users while they developed Mario Kart World, mentioning that when development started on the Nintendo Switch 2, it presented numerous opportunities for what could be accomplished. In essence, it was a beacon of hope.
On more than one occasion, Nintendo has simultaneously launched a major game on different platforms.
Initially designed for the Wii U console, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was eventually released on not just the Wii U but also the Nintendo Switch, when it debuted in 2017.
In essence, the Wii U edition of Breath of the Wild is now notoriously known for its poor performance, particularly in terms of the game’s frame rate.
It’s understandable then, that instead of squeezing the game onto less capable hardware, Nintendo chose to devote their efforts entirely to a superior console version of the game.
