Amidst a strong comeback for Star Wars Battlefront 2, a former developer from DICE who previously worked on the game indicates that he and multiple other ex-colleagues might rejoin the franchise if presented with the chance.
The comment was made by Mats Helge Holm, who initially worked as a quality assurance analyst for the reboot and sequel of Star Wars Battlefront in 2015 and 2017 respectively. Later on, he took up the role of Associate Producer for the Celebration Edition (and its upgrade) released in 2019, which included hundreds of new cosmetic items to the multiplayer shooter reminiscent of Battlefield.
In response to a question about who would return to Battlefront on Reddit, Holm stated that he himself and some of his former colleagues were hoping to reunite their team.
The ongoing success of Battlefront 2 is being further validated as it consistently attracts thousands of players and recently peaked at 9,292 on Steam, according to data from SteamDB. This might appear modest when considering the tens of thousands of simultaneous players that newer games boast, but for Battlefront 2, this is a significant increase. In fact, since surpassing 10,000 players in January 2021, it had only managed to achieve a player count of 5,000 one other time.
Additionally, Steam isn’t the only platform where Battlefront 2 can be found. The game is also accessible on the EA App, the Epic Games Store, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, and PS4. Furthermore, those with an EA Play subscription (which comes with both the PC and Ultimate tiers of Xbox Game Pass) can play it too. While we can’t precisely measure where fans are playing, a trusted source like BattlefrontUpdates claims that the game’s combined concurrent player count on all platforms has peaked at over 160,000 recently. However, some might find this figure a bit unusually high.
The main factor behind its comeback can largely be traced back to a string of occurrences and launches that have ignited immense curiosity towards the Star Wars universe. For instance, this month’s May the 4th celebrations, the introduction of the Galactic Battle season in Fortnite, and the highly-praised second season of the series Andor, which has been hailed as one of the finest Star Wars content ever created (truly exceptional).
The renewed excitement surrounding Battlefront 2 has sparked a surge of fans returning to the game, voicing their demands for a third installment on various social media platforms. The popular hashtags #MakeBattlefront3 and #Battlefront3 are currently trending as fans express their eagerness. Even Muhannad Ben Amor, an actor from Star Wars: Andor, added his support, stating in an Instagram story that “Star Wars needs to give us Battlefront 3 as soon as possible” and sharing his nostalgia for Battlefront 2, having been a dedicated player since its initial release. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for the development of Battlefront 3!

As a tech enthusiast, I can’t help but share my infectious excitement about the topic at hand. However, I must admit, reuniting the original development team might prove challenging given our geographical dispersal. Frankly, I’m not sure if it’s even feasible.
Holm added that if a suitable team was available, creating an Andor-themed content pack for Battlefront 2 would take about six months. However, since DICE ceased producing new content for the game in 2020, with most of its team members shifting to Battlefield 2042 or other projects, such a team is not currently present. It’s worth noting that DICE is also working on the next Battlefield title along with three other studios at this time.
In 2021, there were reports that a proposal for Battlefront 3 from DICE was rejected by Electronic Arts (EA) due to high Star Wars licensing expenses. According to an unnamed developer, it was declined as it required 20% more sales to generate the same profit.
Given everything we’ve discussed, it appears rather improbable for Electronic Arts (EA) to release a third game in their modern Battlefront series, considering that the 2015 and 2017 games are reboots of the original 2004 and 2005 titles by Pandemic Studios who no longer exist. However, this isn’t stopping passionate Star Wars enthusiasts from urging EA to create another one. Let’s hope for the best – may the Force be with them! Battlefront 2 is an exceptional game that effectively immerses you into the world of stormtroopers and battle droids from the movies, and it certainly deserves a follow-up. I wouldn’t bet against it!
By the way, check this out! The Xbox version of Battlefront 2 is currently selling for only $12.09 on CDKeys, and the PC edition is also discounted to $14.69. Don’t miss out on this deal and join the gaming fun while it lasts!
