According to a former actor from the “Mission: Impossible” series, the death scene filmed wasn’t at all similar to the one viewers ultimately saw. The fourth installment in the franchise, “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol,” is famous for Tom Cruise performing an action sequence outside the towering Burj Khalifa in Dubai. However, this movie almost included another scene that would have been incredibly memorable due to its insanity, if it hadn’t been eliminated as being too extreme.
As a diehard fan here, I’m thrilled to share that Josh Holloway recently revealed intriguing insights about an alternate scene from Ghost Protocol, which would have made his character’s demise even more chilling if the original footage had been included (as disclosed on The Julia Cunningham Show on SiriusXM).
In the initial scenario, Paula Patton appears and finds me near death, but I’m not quite gone yet. At this point, I begin to whisper the codes to her before succumbing completely. This forces her to perform a life-saving procedure: opening my chest, inserting her hand into my heart, resuscitating it, and bringing me back from the brink of death. Once revived, I share the codes with her, only then allowing myself to die again.
Later on, Holloway remembered the entirely sensible rationale for the producers choosing to soften this particular scene, resulting in a less gory ending for Holloway’s character.
We captured the footage. After viewing it, their reactions were, ‘It’s overly brutal,’ and, ‘The viewers might dislike Paula as she brings you back for information, only to let you die again, when the script calls for love between you.’
What Holloway’s Altered Death Scene Meant For Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol
It Saved One Of The Film’s Major Storylines
In line with the series’ practice of surprising viewers right from the start, it’s Trevor Hanaway portrayed by Holloway, not Ethan Hunt played by Cruise, who initiates the initial action scene reminiscent of “Ghost Protocol.” This thrilling sequence involves Hanaway pursued on a rooftop, culminating in him leaping from the building while firing at his pursuers. Thanks to some ingenious IMF technology, he miraculously avoids shattering all his bones. However, his escape is foiled when, unexpectedly, a stylish woman with a silenced gun fatally shoots Hanaway.
Eventually, the events of Ghost Protocol pause momentarily to provide insight into Hanaway’s mission. The deceased agent’s supervisor, Jane Parker (Patton), narrates their failed Budapest operation where they attempted to seize nuclear codes. As the narrative unfolds through a flashback, we see Jane arriving at Hanaway’s side mere seconds after his unknown assassin departs. Her emotional response suggests that they had been romantically involved.
In my view, the film effectively conveys the intense motivation behind Jane’s actions, ensuring a significant impact from Hanaway’s demise on her narrative arc. This culminates dramatically when I find myself face-to-face with Sabine Moreau (portrayed by Lea Seydoux), the very person responsible for Hanaway’s death, and ultimately, I manage to exact my revenge by sending her plummeting from the Burj Khalifa.
Our Take On Holloway’s Original Death Scene
Mission: Impossible Is Always Action-Packed, But Seldom Gory
In a different phrase, the “Mission: Impossible” franchise frequently includes intense scenes where characters are revived from near-death situations (Hunt has been resuscitated not just once but twice in the storyline using defibrillators). However, the scene suggested by Holloway would have added an unusually high level of graphic content to the series, pushing the boundaries and increasing the horror element.
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I’m grateful that cooler minds prevailed, saving Ghost Protocol from a sequence that could have disrupted not only the film’s tone but also Jane’s well-crafted character. It’d be fascinating to catch a glimpse of the original scene, which seems more suited for a horror flick than the high-octane action of Mission: Impossible.
