Dragon Ball Z French Voice Legend Eric Legrand Passes Away at 66

Eric Legrand, a cherished French voice actor known for voicing numerous anime series for the French audience, has sadly passed away at 66 years old. One of Legrand’s most iconic roles was Vegeta and Yamcha in the French version of Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and Dragon Ball Super. Patrick Borg, who voiced Goku in the French dub of Dragon Ball, confirmed Legrand’s passing on Facebook with a touching tribute. In his post, Borg fondly remembers Legrand as a “true Saiyan,” honoring their decades-long collaboration playing the last two Saiyans in the Dragon Ball Universe.

Despite the common focus on Japanese or English voice acting in anime discussions, it’s important to note that numerous countries possess impressive dubbing industries for anime. Countries like those in Latin America and Europe are particularly renowned for their high-quality dubs. For instance, France has a reputation as an early adopter of the anime medium, boasting one of the largest fan bases outside Japan. The French dub of “Dragon Ball” is a notable example that played a significant role in popularizing the franchise within the country, thereby ensuring its longevity for decades to come.

Eric Legrand’s Career in Anime and Animation

Borg discloses that he kept in touch with Legrand until his passing, and furthermore shares that he had been visiting a Palliative Care facility on the previous Monday, as expressed in his Facebook post.

Goodbye, dear Eric Legrand. The nickname “my plump turkey” was one of my favorites, always bringing a smile to my face. I used to call you my queen too, and it used to make you laugh just as much. Now those times remind me of a contented turkey, ruffling its feathers. For months we’ve been exchanging messages on WhatsApp, but on the morning of May 19th, last Monday, your care was transferred to palliative services…

It seems we’ve fallen out of communication. Over four and a half decades of friendship and four decades side by side; Dragon Ball Z echoes our camaraderie. Your followers will feel your absence… but I will miss you profoundly! However, putting it another way, I can say that I find myself saddened by the loss of companionship. You’ve demonstrated remarkable courage throughout our friendship, truly embodying a Saiyan like Vegeta. ERIC LEGRAND, you fought like a true Saiyan! On Sunday evening, you sent me a message with just one word in parentheses:

I’ll be moved to the Palliative Care Unit on Monday. I can hardly wait!

Don’t worry, I won’t forget you!

I’m feeling quite down right now…

Until we meet again, my friend.

Eric Legrand’s illustrious career extends beyond just “Dragon Ball.” He also gave voice to the main character in the highly acclaimed anime series, “Saint Seiya,” which gained immense popularity in France. Moreover, he has lent his voice to French dubs of various American productions, such as “Archer” and “Captain Planet.” Besides voicing Vegeta, Yamcha, and others in “Dragon Ball,” Legrand also provided the voices for Mr. Popo, the World Martial Arts Tournament Announcer, and Bojack in the “Dragon Ball Z” movie 9, titled “Bojack Unbound.

Legrand held a cherished place within the anime community, regardless of location. Our sympathies are extended to his loved ones during this difficult time.
