It’s now possible to find the officially developed SteamOS by Valve on portable devices beyond the Steam Deck.
This isn’t a broad, unrestricted launch that might disappoint some (meaning no SteamOS for personal computers), but rather the initial complete, official backing for various portable devices.
As a passionate gaming enthusiast, I’m eagerly awaiting the arrival of my very own Lenovo Legion Go S – the first portable gaming device to come with SteamOS straight out of the box! While it boasts full compatibility, there’s also an extended support line for other handhelds such as the Legion Go and ROG Ally.
For the first time, SteamOS version 3.7 has been officially declared stable. Beyond the added functionality for portable devices, this update is quite extensive in its scope.
Here are some of the headline features:
- Desktop mode now ships with Plasma 6.2.5
- Added support for frame limiting with VRR displays (internal and external)
- Added Battery Charge Limit control to Settings->Power
- This option allows you to set a maximum charge limit for your Steam Deck.
- Limiting the charge limit to 80% can be beneficial for long term battery health. This can be useful if your Steam Deck is constantly being charged (e.g. docked), or very rarely has its battery depleted.
- Fixed a crash when no displays are connected
- Added official support for the Lenovo Legion Go S
- Improved support for other AMD powered handhelds (like the ROG Ally and original Legion Go)
As an analyst, I’d rephrase it this way: To run SteamOS on another handheld device similar to the Legion Go and ROG Ally, there’s a crucial requirement. It necessitates an AMD CPU and graphics hardware, along with an NVMe SSD designed for handheld devices, essentially a PCIe 4.0 SSD.
This expands the options beyond merely the two mentioned handheld devices, as even those from companies like AYANEO, which utilize AMD hardware, could potentially run such a system as well.
Currently, there’s no exception for the existing MSI Claw series, as they are equipped with Intel CPUs and integrated graphics.
Should you be eager to personalize your portable device into a Steam Deck replica, feel free to explore Valve’s comprehensive setup guide whenever it suits you best. All you’ll require is a USB drive and some spare time, with minimal additional needs.
