Zachary Levi Reveals How Sharing Political Views Changed His Career: ‘I Knew This Would Happen’

Actor Zachary Levi has enjoyed a lengthy and thriving profession, gracing both stage and screen with notable performances. This includes his roles as Shazam in the DCEU (which can be watched with a Max subscription) and Fandral in the MCU (available on Disney+). However, his career seems to have taken a pause of late, possibly due to his public expression of conservative opinions. Now, at 44 years old, he’s contemplating this choice and its impact on the projects he’s offered.

Following his involvement in notable productions such as “Tangled” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”, Levi started expressing skepticism towards vaccinations, and later admitted his backing for Donald Trump’s re-election. In a conversation with Variety, he discussed the potential consequences on his workload, stating:

It appears that some individuals have expressed a preference not to collaborate with me due to my views, as my team has communicated to me. No specific names have been mentioned, but it’s clear that there are those who currently choose not to work with me. Unfortunately, I had anticipated this might occur. I didn’t arrive at this decision lightly or without consideration.

As a movie enthusiast, it’s generally accepted that Hollywood leans towards progressive politics. Yet, Levi’s public political views set him apart from many of his fellow actors. Interestingly, he’s been told by someone in the industry that there are those who wouldn’t wish to collaborate with him due to his views.

At the moment, it’s not likely that he’ll be featured in any upcoming DC movies as Shazam, since a new cinematic universe is being developed. However, DC boss James Gunn hasn’t ruled out Zachary Levi entirely amidst the controversy. Yet, the specific role or timing of the character in this new universe, particularly during its initial phase titled “Gods and Monsters,” remains uncertain.

Despite his current situation, Zachary Levi, known for his role in Chuck, has several upcoming projects, some already in post-production and others in production. Moreover, he intends to expand his career beyond acting. Remarkably, he aspires to establish a film studio in Austin and is actively working on securing the $40 million needed to bring this vision to life.

Other than continuing with screen roles, Zachary Levi could potentially make a comeback on stage, considering his background as a seasoned Broadway performer. He’s renowned for his work in productions such as “First Date” and the revival of “She Loves Me”. In “She Loves Me”, he shared the stage with the late Gavin Creel, although there was some controversy surrounding his online responses within the theater community.

At the moment, Levi is slated to work on two future films scheduled for release in 2025 – “Not Without Hope” and “Sarah’s Oil”. Time will tell whether or not these projects materialize.
