Despite the launch of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Legends of the Zone Trilogy – Enhanced Edition on May 20, which offers free updates for all original trilogy owners, developer GSC Game World has faced a review bombing campaign following player discoveries that certain elements like Russian voiceovers and Soviet-era landmarks were surreptitiously omitted.
The S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Legends of the Zone Trilogy – Enhanced Edition offers refurbished editions of Shadow of Chornobyl (2007), Clear Sky (2008), and Call of Prypiat (2009) featuring improved graphics, console optimizations for modern systems, and increased mod support. Upon its release, the games received a largely negative reception on Steam due to user complaints about poor visual clarity and their disappointment that the games had become blurrier, apparently censored, and revised with added advertisements.
One player expressed their thoughts as follows: “I already own the original versions and have played them extensively. If I buy an upgraded version, I want it to be something new and enticing that makes me eager to dive back into the game. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case for me. The graphics haven’t been significantly improved to spark excitement, and I have ambivalent feelings about removing the Russian references. To be honest, I consider the original games as reflections of their historical context. While I understand the developers’ concerns regarding sensitivity, I’m unsure what benefits there are in rewriting that history.
Although it’s free, I still feel it lacks significant improvement compared to the original version. Frankly speaking, if you desire an upgraded edition, you can modify it yourself or opt for Anomaly. In my opinion, GSC should have done more and cosmetic adjustments aren’t quite enough.
Game studio GSC World, hailing from Kyiv, Ukraine, experienced an interruption in the development of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 due to Russia’s extensive invasion in February 2022. As a consequence, some team members have temporarily shifted their work to Prague. Tragically, one former GSC developer, Volodymyr Yezhov, has lost his life during the conflict.
In response to unfavorable feedback, GSC has recently released an update and a fix, asserting they will rectify crashes occurring on non-compatible computer hardware and certain gaming consoles. Additionally, this update aims to tackle save problems and restore missing structures on multiple stages.
Regarding stalkers, we value your input and are diligently addressing the major problems,” the team communicated. “Our goal is to ensure your return to the Zone is memorable.” They also mentioned their commitment to further enhancing the trilogy.
In the games, the term “missing geometry” is understood as the unaccounted-for Soviet artifacts scattered throughout all three titles. It’s uncertain whether GSC intentionally altered or was forced to modify Soviet symbolism, but PC Gamer managed to verify that the sign or monument near the real Chornobyl, which bore the inscription “ChAES in the name of VI Lenin,” had been removed at least. What remained were “the two concrete bases where it originally stood.
The update made no explicit mention of the missing audio or the blurry textures.
One elated Reddit user exclaimed excitedly, ‘They listened! They listened! They listened!’ He expressed his gratitude that EE is addressing the problems, saying, ‘Although there are still some issues, I’m so glad they’re working on fixing the game and not just ignoring feedback.’
One player commented: “That’s far superior to simply erasing it without a trace, it shows appreciation for the ongoing denazification process without suppressing anything that came before it.
Another user commented, “This is a great initial move. I’m optimistic that we’ll address other concerns such as the frequently mentioned blur problem and items missing from clearly labeled storage spaces.
