Next month, a highly underrated action movie featuring a popular star will be joining Peacock’s lineup. This isn’t “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” but it’s definitely a worthy alternative!
Starting June 1st, I, as a cinema enthusiast, can’t wait to stream the gripping action movie, “Jack Reacher,” on Peacock! This 2012 film is an adaptation of Lee Child’s 2005 novel “One Shot.” The movie, written and directed by some talented individuals, sees Tom Cruise brilliantly portraying the titular character. In this tale, Jack Reacher is summoned to assist in a homicide investigation, where a trained military sniper, suspected of orchestrating a mass shooting, comes under scrutiny.
Critics lauded “Jack Reacher,” with a 64% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and it proved to be a commercial success, raking in over $215 million worldwide against a production budget of just $60 million. Can’t wait to revisit this exciting chapter!
The 2016 film “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back” served as a sequel to the original “Jack Reacher”. This movie was adapted from Lee Child’s 2013 novel with the same title. In this action-packed thriller, Tom Cruise’s character Jack Reacher teams up with Army Major Susan Turner, played by Cobie Smulders from “The Avengers”, when she is falsely accused of espionage. As they uncover a sinister plot together, they find themselves on the run. Regrettably, despite being lauded for its action scenes and Cruise’s performance, the movie didn’t meet expectations for Paramount Pictures. The sequel fell short in terms of both critical reception (37% on Rotten Tomatoes) and box office earnings ($162M), failing to match the success of the first film.
Alan Ritchson Is the New Jack Reacher
Following the underperformance of “Never Go Back” at the box office, the “Jack Reacher” series was revamped for streaming platforms, and Alan Ritchson stepped into Tom Cruise’s shoes as the lead character. After three successful seasons, “Reacher” has proven to be a hit on Prime Video, with each season garnering positive critical acclaim and substantial viewership. In a statement announcing its return, Vernon Sanders, head of television at Amazon MGM Studios, expressed enthusiasm, stating that “Reacher” has surpassed their wildest expectations in captivating their global audience and they are excited to continue the series for another season.
In 2020, McQuarrie mentioned discussions about a third Reacher film with Cruise, aiming for an R-rating. However, it appears that Amazon Prime Video isn’t planning to relinquish the franchise anytime soon. Apart from the anticipated fourth season of Reacher, which Ritchson suggested could be its best yet, Amazon is also broadening the franchise by developing a spinoff focusing on a new character.
In the eagerly awaited spinoff, the character named Neagley will trail the title detective as she becomes relentlessly driven by the pursuit of justice following the revelation that a cherished friend from her past met an unusual demise in an accident. Leveraging the skills she’s honed from Jack Reacher and her tenure with the 110 Special Investigators, Neagley embarks on a perilous journey to expose a sinister force.
Jack Reacher arrives on Peacock on June 1.
