In a thrilling turn of events, Image Comics is inviting fans on an exciting voyage through Spawn’s hidden past with a fresh new series, and we have an exclusive sneak peek to whet your appetite! The new series, christened Bloodletter, brings forth a captivating anti-hero named Tasha Thornwall and her intriguing link to Al Simmons and Spawn. This electrifying journey is being masterfully crafted by the stellar team consisting of Joseph P. Illidge (Batman, Milestone Universe: The Shadow Cabinet), Tim Seeley (Revival, Hack/Slash), Christian Rosado (Vampirella, Skull and Bones: Savage Storm), DC Alonso (Avengers), and AndWorld Design. To give you a glimpse of what’s to come, Illidge has graciously provided insights into several scenes from the highly anticipated series in the preview below.
On the initial page, a violent battle unfolds where Bloodletter decisively defeats her adversaries in a gruesome manner, even though they outnumbered her significantly. True to her title, she swiftly dispatches them all. Additionally, there’s a subtle nod to the universe’s renowned hero, known for wearing a red cape, embedded within this scene.
For the first time, Tasha Thornwall is shown subduing individuals, and she does so with an impressive blend of finesse and ruthlessness, as noted by Illidge. Her actions are a result of her past experiences in the CIA and her unique methods of murder, which have earned her the reputation of ‘The Bloodletter’ globally. I can’t help but appreciate how Christian has styled Tasha’s trench coat to resemble a cape. By the way, does anyone else in this universe wear a red cape? 😉
On the second page, you’ll notice Bloodletter with her back and arms visible, hinting at her mystical abilities. However, she isn’t there alone; you can also spot Casper and Illidge has hinted at some major revelations concerning her identity and significance within this book.
On her body, the character known as Bloodletter bears numerous tattoos and scars, directly linked to her powerful mysticism and ability to endure battles against angels and demons. As for who accompanies Tasha on this particular page, Casper is her sidekick, who turns out to be far more than people might initially think,” Illidge stated.
The final scene offers a glimpse into the tranquility preceding the upheaval, although it’s important to note that Bloodletter’s world isn’t characterized by glossy Bond villains or sleek locales like those portrayed by Stanley Kubrick. Instead, she navigates the murky middle-ground, a realm where crime and magic intertwine subversively. Tasha is unaware that her life is on the verge of a significant shift in this gritty, pungent environment…but that will soon be disrupted within the next two minutes, as per Illidge’s statement.
Fundamentally, this narrative revolves around the concept of blending elements, as Seeley pointed out. For our main character, Tasha, it’s her unique mix of spying skills and urban magic that makes her an indomitable survivor in a realm inhabited by characters such as Spawn, Overtkill, and Violator. Similarly, the comic itself is a fusion, created by Joe, Christian, and him, yielding something fresh and innovative, none of which could have been imagined individually.
Rosado stated, ‘It’s a blend of blood, magic, introspective evil, love, and redemption. Tasha evolved into an independent character, and our role is to chronicle her story, segment by segment. In this gritty and ominous realm, we’ve been given the opportunity to introduce a fresh character. Joe, Tim, and I are tasked with revealing her struggles and the insights she offers us.’
Starting from June 18th, you can get your hands on “The Bloodletter” at comic shops, or even pre-order it ahead of time! Meanwhile, keep a lookout for “The Bloodletter #2”, which will be available in stores starting July 23rd. For more details about the comic, check out the official description provided below.
