Marvel Studios made a concerted effort to conceal a significant scene involving the character Taskmaster in the trailers and marketing campaign for their latest film within the MCU, Thunderbolts. Contrary to expectations raised by Olga Kurlyenko’s billing as one of the main characters on the team featured in Marvel’s final Phase 5 movie, the trailers presented a narrative that differed from what actually unfolded.
Marvel Studios strategically manipulated the clips from their movie “Thunderbolts” in the trailer, concealing Taskmaster’s demise. Initially, there wasn’t much of Taskmaster shown in the trailers to begin with, but Marvel Studios hinted at a more significant role for the Black Widow antagonist than what was eventually revealed in her comeback.
Initially, the camera captures Taskmaster standing alongside his fellow Thunderbolts team members, all of them positioned in front of Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ character Val, who is inside Watchtower (previously known as Avengers Tower). It’s easy to spot her, fully costumed, sandwiched between Hannah John-Kamen’s Ghost and Wyatt Russell’s John Walker/U.S. Agent in the scene.
In the end, Taskmaster didn’t appear in this movie scene during the editing process since her character had already been killed prior to when the team came together. It’s important to note that she passed away even before encountering Sebastian Stan’s character, Bucky Barnes.
In the trailer, it appears that the other Taskmaster will be alongside the team in a bunker, bathed in a reddish glow just before the bunker seems set to be destroyed by fire.
In a similar fashion, this scene in the film unfolded shortly following Antoinia Dreykov’s demise. Regrettably, she didn’t survive long enough for the incinerator to be activated.
In the final version of the movie “Thunderbolts”, Olga Kurlyenko’s character, Taskmaster, appeared for just a few minutes on-screen after being dispatched to the bunker during Valentina Allegra de Fontaine’s attack. After a brief skirmish involving Yelena Belova, John Walker, and Ghost, it was Ghost who fatally shot Taskmaster in the head.
In theaters globally, Marvel Studios presents “Thunderbolts,” a fresh ensemble cast drawn from various recent Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) adventures, consisting of antiheroes and past adversaries. They band together to confront Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, only to find themselves up against one of the MCU’s most formidable villains yet – Sentry.
Marvel’s History of Hiding Spoilers in MCU Trailers
Although Marvel Studios has been skillful at concealing plot twists in their trailers, the approach for Taskmaster didn’t resonate as successfully with viewers compared to their previous efforts to maintain secrecy. Given that she appeared briefly in the movie and had limited dialogue, her demise left fans underwhelmed, prompting speculation that Marvel could have developed the character more substantially within the MCU.
Yet, it doesn’t mean that Marvel hasn’t managed to conceal significant spoilers in their previous trailers, even for scenes that many viewers anticipated would happen.
Consider the case of the movie “Spider-Man: No Way Home”. The second trailer of this film significantly reduced or even omitted the appearances of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s characters, who are known as Spider-Man’s legacy heroes. Despite fans anticipating their involvement in the storyline due to hints about their presence alongside old villains from Sony films, their eventual appearance still left a significant impression on viewers when it finally happened, as they had not been featured at all in any trailers prior to that.
Moving forward, Marvel maintains this pattern for its upcoming film, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps“, by not revealing Sue Storm’s pregnancy when the initial trailer dropped. Although it remains a mystery how much of the movie she will be pregnant, the appearance of Franklin Richards in the MCU is now one of the most highly anticipated moments in the franchise’s near future.
As the release dates for upcoming movies such as “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars” get pushed back, it’s almost certain that their trailers will show scenes significantly different from the final versions. Given the anticipation surrounding these films, which are predicted to break records in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel is likely to go to great lengths to prevent major plot points from being exposed prematurely.
