It’s my belief that the year 2026’s autumn could be an exceptionally competitive season at the cinemas. In terms used by Hollywood, the autumn movie season typically spans from early October to Christmas, marking the start of the winter movie season. During this period, both award-winning films and major blockbusters are often released. Notably, significant box office hits like several Harry Potter movies, all Hunger Games films, and four out of five Twilight films took advantage of the Thanksgiving holiday rush.
Initially, I was captivated by the upcoming summer of 2026, a season known for its abundance of blockbuster movies due to school breaks. Typically, the summer movie season offers a plethora of big-budget films, and 2026 is no exception. It will feature new installments from popular franchises like Minions 3, Toy Story 5, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and the live-action Moana remake, along with Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey and an unnamed Steven Spielberg production. However, it seems that the fall of 2026 may boast an even more impressive lineup of box office hits.
Avengers: Doomsday Is Landing Among A Huge Roster Of Blockbusters
It Was Just Moved From May To December
The reason I noticed the shift in release date for “Avengers: Doomsday” to December 18, 2026, from its initial May 1, 2026 slot, was because it caught my attention. “Doomsday” is the fifth installment of the Avengers subseries within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Avengers series, along with other superhero crossover films, makes up only a fraction of the entire franchise, with 39 movies planned by the time “Doomsday” comes out. However, the four previous Avengers films combined have amassed over $7.5 billion in global box office revenue.
* “Avengers: Doomsday”
* “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping”
* Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of “Chronicles of Narnia”
* Sequels from two major animated franchises.
Title | Release Date |
---|---|
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping | November 20, 2026 |
Untitled Walt Disney Animation Studios Movie | November 25, 2026 |
Greta Gerwig’s Chronicles of Narnia Movie | Thanksgiving 2026 |
Untitled Jumanji: The Next Level Sequel | December 11, 2026 |
Dune: Messiah | December 18, 2026 |
Avengers: Doomsday | December 18, 2026 |
Ice Age 6 | December 18, 2026 |
Shrek 5 | December 23, 2026 |
It appears quite plausible that the release date of Dune: Messiah, the third film in Denis Villeneuve’s series based on Frank Herbert’s works, might be postponed since Avengers: Doomsday is now set for the same weekend. I suspect Warner Bros. might prefer to avoid such intense competition, as the sequel to the widely acclaimed 1965 novel Dune is a more risky proposition. However, it’s worth noting that December 18 is already brimming with major franchise releases, each of which could potentially ignite the box office ahead of Christmas.
Fall 2026 Could Have Multiple Billion-Dollar Movies
Avengers: Doomsday Is Just One Of The Potential Smash Hits
Given that each of the Avengers films have earned over $1 billion, it appears likely that Doomsday will achieve the same billion-dollar success. However, I have my doubts that it will be the only film to reach this prestigious mark. Contrastingly, Greta Gerwig’s Chronicles of Narnia movie on Netflix, which is only getting a limited theater release, seems unlikely to pass the $1 billion milestone. Similarly, while films like Dune, Jumanji, and The Hunger Games belong to franchises that have historically performed well, they haven’t come close to reaching the $1 billion mark in recent times.
Instead, consider this rephrasing: Shrek 5 and Ice Age have the potential to leverage their long absence from theaters and nostalgia to surpass the box office successes of previous films like Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs ($886.7 million) and Shrek 2 ($933.8 million).
In the fall of 2026, I’m excited to share that there are several movies beyond the anticipated billion-dollar franchise blockbusters that could potentially make a splash at the box office. The lineup boasts an exciting collaboration between Tom Cruise and Alejandro G. Iñárritu, director of The Revenant, a DreamWorks production titled Forgotten Island, and Jordan Peele’s fourth directorial effort. Any one of these films could strike a powerful chord with audiences.
