The new Netflix miniseries titled Sirens narrates a turbulent weekend at an opulent seaside residence, where various characters are compelled to revisit their old wounds. In the series Sirens, Devon (played by Meghann Fahy) serves as the main character and attempts to save her sister, Simone (Milly Alcock), from the clutches of the enigmatic billionaire Michaela Kell (Julianne Moore). Although Simone appears to have a dream job as Michaela’s personal assistant, Devon uncovers secrets about Simone’s past that challenge her sister’s seemingly idyllic life with the eccentric tycoon.
The five episodes of “Sirens” progressively unveil the turbulent childhoods of Devon and her younger sister, with Devon taking on caregiving responsibilities for Simone at a young age. Despite their flaws, it’s clear to viewers why they sometimes make poor choices. A significant part of “Sirens” focuses on them dealing with their past, including the disclosure of their mother’s fate, which ultimately leads to Simone’s contentious decision in the series finale.
Simone & Devon’s Mom Died By Suicide When They Were 7 & 12 Years Old
Simone Initially Lies About Her Mother’s Death
As Sirens unfolds, Simone and Devon’s intricate family background becomes clearer. From the start, viewers understand that Devon is concerned about their ailing father who has early-onset dementia, as she seeks assistance from Simone. It quickly becomes apparent that Simone shows no inclination towards helping Devon care for their father, largely because of the emotional turmoil they endured during their childhood. A significant portion of this distress stems from their father’s absence, but it is also deeply rooted in the sorrowful suicide of their mother.
In a bid to dodge contemplating her distressing childhood experiences, Simone falsifies information to Michaela regarding her past. A key fabrication is that she lost her mother in a car crash. However, it later emerges that her mother took her own life while driving, and the incident left an indelible mark on both Simone and Devon. It was actually Devon who ensured Simone’s survival during this tragic event.
Devon managed to locate her sister in the car and drove her to the emergency room, thus saving her sister’s life. Additionally, Devon took on the responsibilities that their mother would have handled, including leaving school to care for Simone. It’s understandable why Simone holds feelings of resentment towards their mother, given her avoidance of discussing her mother’s demise. However, despite being very young at the time of her mother’s passing, Simone’s recollections and adult comprehension of that event significantly shape who she is today.
Why Their Mom Tried To Kill Simone, But Not Devon, With Her In The Car
Devon Wonders Why Her Mom Left Her Alone
Episode 3 of Sirens delves deeper into the history shared by Devon and Simone than earlier episodes, exploring truths about their mother’s demise and their feelings towards it. While Simone was too young to fully grasp her mother’s passing at the time, Devon, who was 12 years old, had a clearer understanding of the devastating consequences of her mother’s actions and how they would shape their lives in the future.
When Devon wakes up from a nap and discovers Michaela in the bathtub, they engage in a deeply emotional, dream-like dialogue. Stunningly, Michaela queries Devon about whether she has ever harbored feelings of jealousy regarding her mom’s decision to bring Simone along, pointing out that those spared can sometimes question why they were chosen. In response, Devon clarifies to Michaela that her mother did not spare her; instead, she was left alone with a seven-year-old to care for and an alcoholic father who neglected them both.
Despite Sirens not explicitly explaining why Simone’s mother attempted to kill her in the car rather than Devon, the series delves into Devon’s thoughts about this event. The peculiarity of her encounter with Michaela leaves it uncertain whether Devon is dreaming the dialogue or if it truly happened. Regardless, Sirens emphasizes that Devon ponders why her mother abandoned her to handle everything on her own at such a tender age, regarding the situation not as being “spared” but left without guidance on how to care for herself.
