After wrapping up its third season last month, it’s been shared that The Wheel of Time will not continue for any more seasons.
2021 saw the debut of a popular fantasy TV series, adapted from the Robert Jordan book series, that received a large audience and positive critical acclaim. This acclaim has only grown as the show progresses, with critics continuing to shower it with praise.
Featuring a renowned ensemble led by Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike as Moiraine Damodred alongside stars like Daniel Henney from Criminal Minds and Sophie Okonedo known for Ratched and Britannia, it’s no surprise that the series garnered wide appeal right from its debut.
Although many consider the latest season as the show’s best yet, it seems that this hasn’t been sufficient to guarantee a fourth season for it.
As I’ve learned from Deadline, it seems that after extended discussions, Prime Video decided not to renew our beloved series. This action appears to be rooted in fiscal considerations.

Although the show initially boasted a significant audience and a loyal fanbase, by the time season 3 arrived, its overall viewership had noticeably decreased.
Due to the expensive nature of creating this series and the underperformance of Season 3 according to Deadline’s analysis, it seems Amazon Prime Video decided not to invest further in the show because its performance didn’t justify the high costs compared to what Prime Video was willing to spend on another season.
It’s essential to bear in mind the various expensive projects that Prime is managing concurrently, such as The Boys, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Fallout, and also the James Bond series following its acquisition by Amazon, their parent company.
Based on Nielsen’s Top 10 Original rankings, which track U.S. viewership statistics, it’s worth noting that the most recent season of The Wheel of Time didn’t sustain its position after three weeks, whereas the first two seasons managed to stay on the chart throughout their entire runs.
Even though the rankings don’t factor in global audience reach, the series’ high position across various countries on Amazon Prime Video suggests that a decline in viewership within one of its major markets could serve as a worrying sign for most shows.
The cancelation of the show is bound to be a tough blow for its dedicated viewers, as it found its unique identity particularly in season 3. However, the way the third season concluded might offer some sense of resolution.
In spite of the show’s cancellation, Amazon Prime Video and its lead studio, Sony TV, are still actively promoting Emmy nominations for The Wheel of Time’s third season, as reported by Deadline.
