Showrunner Tony Gilroy, known for his work on “Andor”, has expressed his views on a widely loved romance from the film “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”. Gilroy first became associated with the Star Wars universe when he was enlisted to assist with rewrites and reshoots for the third act of “Rogue One”. Later, he served as showrunner for “Andor”, a series that has garnered critical acclaim following its two successful seasons. As is common with prequels, “Andor” has the potential to alter perceptions about “Rogue One” by adding fresh aspects to the storyline and challenging previous assumptions.
In a conversation with Vulture, Gilroy discussed his methodology for structuring the events depicted in Rogue One and the instances where he opted to omit certain film elements. This eventually led to his views on the possible romantic relationship between Jyn Erso and Cassian Andor within Rogue One:.
Given my extensive engagement with the series “Rogue”, it seems plausible under the given circumstances that their relationship doesn’t appear inconsistent. After all, Bix has been gone for a year, and considering it’s a frat house environment, who knows where she might be. She chose to leave him, yet they are both vibrant individuals whose company one wouldn’t hesitate to cherish at the story’s end. To me, their dynamic evolves into something more intriguing and captivating, which I find quite appealing. However, my opinion may change as I continue watching it.
While it’s important to acknowledge that some fans have dedicated significant time and effort to viewing certain stories as epic love sagas, I must clarify that these interpretations are non-canonical to my project when constructing the series.
What Tony Gilroy’s Comments Mean About His Approach To Andor
He Was Aware Of Jyn & Cassian’s Relationship, But It Wasn’t His Biggest Concern
As a cinephile, Gilroy’s perspective on Jyn and Cassian’s relationship mirrors his methodology in crafting the narrative for ‘Andor’. In an interview, he mentioned that he chose not to revisit ‘Rogue One’, instead trusting those who confirmed that ‘Andor’s story did not conflict with the film. Gilroy chooses to maintain his focus on the current storyline, avoiding delving too deeply into “homework-like backstory”, as the interviewer put it.
Gilroy focused extensively on developing the romantic storyline between Cassian and Bix in ‘Andor’ season 2, a move that may suggest less emphasis on any potential relationship between Cassian and Jyn. However, Gilroy does recognize that they might harbor feelings for each other, particularly during life-threatening situations. But, he emphasizes that their romantic history isn’t officially established in the series, even though he acknowledges that many fans have a fondness for the idea of Jyn and Cassian, despite ‘Rogue One’ not fully delving into it.
Our Take On Gilroy’s Approach To Rogue One
He’s Correct That Focusing On The Story At Hand Is Most Important
Although some viewers might disapprove of Gilroy’s perspective on Jyn and Cassian’s romance in “Rogue One,” I believe he maintains a commendable approach when it comes to Star Wars storytelling. His assessment of their relationship aligns remarkably well with what is portrayed onscreen, demonstrating his awareness of the film. It’s crucial to respect canon, but it’s refreshing to see creators who prioritize the narrative they’re crafting over setting up future stories.
If Gilroy had kept Cassian’s romantic life private due to Jyn, then the delightful bond between him and Bix wouldn’t have formed. The same applies to the entirety of Andor, which skillfully narrated its own captivating tale while seamlessly setting the stage for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Although some details might have changed, it’s evident that this Star Wars venture was in capable hands with Tony Gilroy.
