The series “Alien: Earth” will debut on FX and Hulu in August, featuring a fresh protagonist as she battles against the spread of extraterrestrial creatures known as xenomorphs before Earth is completely overrun. However, unlike Ellen Ripley’s story on the Nostromo, this tale takes a unique turn by unfolding on Earth, which means characters won’t be able to simply launch the alien into space and call it a day. Furthermore, the character of Sydney Chandler’s hybrid Wendy will not conform to typical heroine stereotypes. Instead, she represents a new kind of robotic hybrid in a world dominated by corporations, and these entities may prove to be even more dangerous than the xenomorphs when the show begins airing.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Chandler and creator Noah Hawley discussed various aspects of the series, including Chandler’s multi-faceted character and where the actress envisions her role among the other franchise heroes. Notably, these multi-faceted beings are controlled by Prodigy Corporation, a powerful rival to Weyland-Yutani and one of the five global corporations wielding influence across the planet.
As a cinema enthusiast, I’d put it this way: “The forecasted climate changes seem to be unfolding before our eyes, making the world hotter and wetter. If we project current trends, it appears that corporations wield more influence than democracies. This struggle is not just about technology but a race for supremacy. The essence of power lies in the notion that ‘there can only be one.’ We’re right in the thick of a battle on this level, fighting for who holds the upper hand among humanity.
In the storyline of Prodigy City, the unique hybrids are involved, as Wendy and other hybrids arrive to examine the location of a wrecked Weyland-Yutani spacecraft. Unlike previous robots and cyborgs depicted in the Alien: Earth series, these hybrids are proprietary to Prodigy Corporation, much like how companies release new models of phones annually. However, unlike these devices, the hybrids have a child’s intellect housed within an adult robot body, introducing a distinct twist in their design.
Chandler explains to Entertainment Weekly, “We focused on understanding the children’s physical movements at first, but Noah guided us into considering their mental states. We pondered about the fundamental nature of young individuals – how their thoughts differ from adults’. Children are incredibly present and less influenced by the world compared to adults. Consequently, they rely more on their instincts without overthinking.
In Hawley’s narrative, he finds significance in Ripley’s statement from the movie Aliens, where she questions whether humans or the xenomorphs are more destructive, for his own storyline.
In the movie, Weaver states, “I can’t decide which species is more problematic. They aren’t seen fighting for a fraction of a percent,” igniting some thought processes in Hawley’s brain.
The concept revolves around appalling actions towards one another, explains the creator. Sydney portrays a character with a somewhat pure heart who must negotiate two forms of monstrosity. One originates from humanity, while the other hails from outer space. We delve deeper into this notion that it will be left to viewers to decide which species is more malevolent.
For Chandler, it’s optimistic that viewers will appreciate the newness brought by her character within the series, without compromising the narrative’s quality.
Chandler admitted, ‘Attempting to measure myself against Ripley is out of the question; it’s an impossible task. However, I hope the audience grows to adore Wendy as much as I cherish her. She remains my most beloved character that I’ve had the privilege to portray.’
